  • Teaching the Environmental Humanities

    Open Access•Emily O’gorman, T Van Dooren et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Humanities•2019

This article provides the first international overview and detailed discussion of teaching in the environmental humanities (EH). It is divided into three parts. The first offers a series of regional overviews: where, when, and how EH teaching is taking place. This part highlights some key regional variability in the uptake of teaching in this area, emphasizing important differences in cultural and pedagogical contexts. The second part is a critic…

  • The Materiality of Energy

    Open Access•Christopher F Jones•ARTICLE•Journal of History•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

This article draws on case studies from the energy transitions to coal, oil, and electricity in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in America to highlight the importance of attending to the material dimensions of energy systems. The essay argues that a focus on materiality illuminates both the political stakes of energy infrastructure and helps explain the dynamics of energy transitions

  • History's contributions to energy research and policy

  • Narrating Fukushima

Christopher F Jones, Shi-Lin Loh et al.•ARTICLE•East Asian Science Technology and…•2013

The nuclear meltdowns at Fukushima in the spring of 2011, according to countless media and government analyses, were a failure of Japan: collusive ties between regulators and industry prevented proper enforcement, the nation's nuclear engineers embodied a culture of hubris, and the state prevented the media from raising critical perspectives. This analysis is usefully understood as a narrative. Like all narratives, it reveals certain issues and m…

  • The Social Dimensions of Energy Transitions

Cheryl Allyn Miller, Clark A Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Science as Culture•2013•Citada por: 85•Referencias: 3

The future of energy systems is one of the central policy challenges facing industrial countries. This challenge is complex and multifaceted. Energy systems are among the largest human enterprises

  • Building More Just Energy Infrastructure

    Christopher F Jones•ARTICLE•Science as Culture•2013•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 3

In addition, he appreciates the feedback of Alastair Iles, Clark Miller, and Les Levidow

  • The Carbon-Consuming Home

    Open Access•Christopher Jones, Christopher F Jones•ARTICLE•Enterprise & Society•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 13

Home heating and lighting markets have played crucial and underappreciated roles in driving energy transitions. When historians have studied the adoption of fossil fuels, they have often privileged industrial actors, markets, and technologies. My analysis of the factors that stimulated the adoption of anthracite coal and petroleum during the nineteenth century reveals that homes shaped how, when, and why Americans began to use fossil fuel energy.…

  • A Landscape of Energy Abundance

    Christopher F Jones•ARTICLE•Environmental History•2010•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 7

Between 1820 and 1860, the construction of a network of coal-carrying canals transformed the society, economy, and environment of the eastern mid-Atlantic. Artificial waterways created a new built environment for the region, an energy landscape in which anthracite coal could be transported cheaply, reliably, and in ever-increasing quantities. Flush with fossil fuel energy for the first time, mid-Atlantic residents experimented with new uses of co…
