The Smallest One of All
Hong Kong Disneyland has been a site of contention between the local government, residents, and Disney Company over status as both the smallest Disney resort and aspirational symbol of the global city. This relationship between locals and theme parks in Asia is explored using the multiple methods of 27 semi‐structured interviews with resident visitors and cast members, 1 week of on‐site participant observation, an online survey ( n = 430), and in…
Symbolic Metaphors of Film Epidemic Narratives
Epidemic disaster films take epidemics as the core of their narratives and involve a symbolic system with multiple metaphorical meanings. This study focuses on analysing 45 epidemic disaster films from China, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and the US. It is found that the medical symbols in Chinese and foreign epidemic disaster films that best characterise the epidemic narrative have referential meanings related to three main aspects, namely the occ…
A Benacerraf problem for higher‐order metaphysics
Higher‐order metaphysics is in full swing. Its proponents argue that higher‐order logic should replace set theory at the foundations of mathematics and metaphysics. But amid the enthusiasm, surprisingly little attention has been paid to some serious epistemological challenges facing the program—foremost among them a variant of the Benacerraf challenge, developed by Field and Clarke‐Doane. Roughly put, the challenge is to explain the reliability o…
A scoping review of somatosensory interaction design for mental health and well-being
This study explores the efficacy of somatosensory interactions in enhancing mental health care by examining the deployment and impact of these technologies. Based on a scoping review of 46 research studies, our analysis reveals that traditional mental health interventions often fail to align with prevalent technological trends. However, somatosensory interactions bridge this gap by creating immersive and engaging experiences. Our findings show co…

A Drink on the Terrace with Truus from Delft
Theme parks have been described by scholars as asocial and placeless, but recent research by McCarthy demonstrated that Southern Californians exhibit a strong sense of placement attachment and sociality at Disneyland. With the third highest attendance among theme parks in Europe, De Efteling in the Netherlands provides a congruent comparison to Disneyland since both parks were based in large measure on fairy tales, opened in the 1950s near two la…
The Impacts of Public Art on Cities, Places and People’s Lives
Public art’s accessibility to a broad audience and its potential to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds have granted it a unique power to make strong, enduring impacts on cities, places and people’s lives. The impacts warrant a systematic review and categorization, the results of which will provide insights that contribute to justifying the integral place of public art in society. As no such systematic review has previously been c…
A New Poem by Anna Letitia Barbauld
This short discovery article presents information pertaining to a previously unknown poem of four lines by Anna Letitia Barbauld. The poem is housed at Duke University in the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library
The pedigree of pixie dust
The original Disneyland in California that opened in 1955 was the only one personally built by Walt Disney, who notably disdained Coney Island’s amusement parks while conceiving, developing, and popularizing the successful design and business model for the modern theme park industry. A historical examination reveals many facets of Disneyland to be a remediation of not only seaside parks but an extensive lineage of playful places including Roman S…
Consumption as extended carnival on Tmall in contemporary China
This article examines the multimodalities of banner ads in pervasive marketing and advertising. Departing from the “Double 11 shopping carnival” spectacle on Tmall, this paper conducts a social semiotic and multimodal analysis of banner ads in the Chinese context. As the investigation of the discursive construction process shows, banner ads on Tmall take advantage of human interactivity, intentionality, persuasion and value creation to increase o…
Authentically Disney, distinctly Chinese” and faintly American
Since the 1980s Disney has opened a new overseas theme park every decade. After finding success in Tokyo in 1983, subsequent parks in Paris and Hong Kong have struggled to profit financially and connect culturally with locals. For Shanghai in 2016, Disney utilized a new discourse for the parkʼs development and configuration termed “authentically Disney, distinctly Chinese.” In this paper, Disneyʼs emotional branding strategy for Shanghai Disneyla…
Meet me on main street
Disneyland is often cited by scholars as a pseudo-place, non-place and placeless, but the approximately one million annual passholders in Southern California hold a strong sense of place attachment to the first and only park built by Walt Disney. The particular environmental, cultural, business and personal factors behind Disneyland's development and evolution have produced a special connection between locals and theme park. Manzo and Perkins's (…
The first and last signs of Main Street
Main Street is an indelible image in the American consciousness made hyperreal at Disneyland California in 1955. For subsequent parks in Tokyo and Paris, Disney recontextualized Main Street, but Hong Kong Disneyland’s version was formed as a copy of the California original. This copy demonstrates that transference of a structural form to a new cultural context is not a guarantee of the concomitant transmission of the originating culture’s sensory…
Contemporary Chinese art and the dream of glocalisation
This article addresses the emerging world of modern subjectivities represented by the artwork of 12 renowned contemporary Chinese artists, including CAO Fei, SONG Tao, WANG Qingsong and ZHANG Dali, amongst others. Following the January 2008 discussion by media activist Brian Holmes of the role of art in China’s new economy, the author argues that Chinese artists are adopting diversified media forms and artistic/ design characteristics as timeless…
The branding of a quality liquor as a symbolic effort toward bringing China forward culturally
Liquor consumption involves drinking, socializing, and networking. This article compares two alcoholic beverages, namely, Wuliangye from China and Absolut Vodka from Sweden, with the aim of identifying the means by which the Chinese brand can better succeed in its internationalizing efforts. The article first reviews theories of high- versus low-context cultures as well as cultural branding. Through analysis of the graphic and packaging designs o…

Hester Thrale Piozzi
Hester Thrale Piozzi
Much has been written about Thrale, friend and hostess of Samuel Johnson, but this is the first study to focus on Piozzi as the writer. In his narrative of her life, McCarthy draws on a large body of published and unpublished sources to map Piozzi's literary development, define her literary identity, and evaluate her achievement. In addition to reexamining her best-known works, he present the first serious treatment of her poetry, political works…
