Expectation and “fellow-feeling” in George Eliot’s Daniel Deronda
Critics and readers alike have long regarded George Eliot as a novelist who was unconcerned with suspenseful plotting. In Daniel Deronda (1876), however, the author both celebrates and makes use of the expectation-generating apparatus of serial publication.
