Estimating unknown populations from informant reports using scale-up reference groups and capture-recapture inference
The network scale-up method has long been used to estimate the size of hard-to-reach populations by leveraging the fact that individuals often know members of these groups. By sampling from a frame population and asking respondents how many people they know in both the target group and a reference group of known size, researchers can infer the size of the hidden population. This approach relies on the assumption that, on average, members of both …
Do Positive Feelings Hurt? Disaggregating Positive and Negative Components of Intergenerational Ambivalence
Ambivalence has become an important conceptual development in the study of parent-adult child relations, with evidence highlighting that intergenerational relationships are characterized by a mix of positive and negative components. Recent studies have shown that ambivalence has detrimental consequences for both parents' and adult children's psychological well-being. The underlying assumption of this line of research is that psychological distres…
Time and Scheduling
This article examines time and scheduling dynamics, with particular emphasis on the potential consequences of scheduling constraints for social life. It asks why scheduling conflicts exist and why they are often enormously difficult to resolve, first by providing an overview of traditional approaches to the study of time in the social sciences. These include an extensive literature across a number of disciplines on how societies conceptualize tim…
