Overcurrents of hegemony
“This Is the Place for Questions
Safe Zone trainings are ubiquitous on college campuses but remain understudied as a social justice educational intervention (SJEI). Focusing on data from 56 higher education professionals who facilitate LGBTQ+ SJEIs, a subset of a larger reseach project, we describe their facilitation styles and approaches to facilitation. Findings indicate a lack of formal facilitation training and participant reliance on personal testimonials to inform and bols…
Gender as Spectacle
This paper explores the experiences of nonbinary and trans (NBT) facilitators of Safe Zone workshops, what we call LGBTQ+ social justice educational interventions (SJEIs). Despite their prevalence in higher education for over 3 decades, there remains a paucity of research about them and those who facilitate them. This research focused on 33 NBT participants, a subpopulation within the larger 87 participants, to explore their preparation for LGBGT…

African-centered therapeutic community substance abuse treatment with incarcerated Black males
This article proposes a pilot therapeutic intervention for counseling Black male substance abusers within the carceral system. Despite the noted fact that Black males are disproportionately represented as drug-using offenders, few treatment models exist that are germane to this population. The current model emanated from an African-centered theoretical framework. Additionally, it employed the therapeutic community approach that addresses substanc…
A Sense of Presence
Here I build upon Robert Orsi's work by arguing that we can see presence-and the longing for it-at work beyond the obvious spaces of religious practice. Presence, I propose, is alive and well in mediated apocalypticism, in the intense imagination of the future that preoccupies those who consume its narratives in film, games, and role plays. Presence is a way of bringing worlds beyond into tangible form, of touching them and letting them touch you…

Student affairs professionals’ roles in advancing gender inclusive housing
Gaming Religionworlds
This roundtable article discusses the intersection between digital gaming, new media, and Religious Studies in order to provide an agenda for this growing conversation. We argue that religion plays a prominent role in gaming culture with significant impact on popular collective imaginations; therefore, studying religion in gaming should be central to religious scholars' work in trying to understand perceptions of religion in popular culture. This…
Screening Belief
Ang Lee's The Life of Pi is based on Yann Martel's novel of the same name. The film expands upon the novel's fantastic story through the integration of new visual metaphors that invite religious reflection, and is reinforced by religious rituals within and beyond the film itself. Martel's novel invites readers to believe Pi's story without seeing it. Viewers of the film, by contrast, are invited to believe Pi's story precisely because they are se…
God in the Game
Global interconnectedness is deeply related to electronic ubiquity, the technological dependence that in recent decades has resulted in a smart phone in nearly every American pocket, fidgeted with and fondled on an alarmingly predictable basis. As Todd Gitlin argues, “never have so many communicated so much, on so many screens, through so many channels, absorbing so many hours of irreplaceable human attention, about communications” (2002: 4). The…
