Mechanisms in the Control of Speech Rate
Mechanisms of speech rate control are discussed from the point of view that unidimensional models are inadequate to explain the extensive physiological and acoustical effects observed during changes in speech rate. Evidence is presented to demonstrate that changes in speech rate can result in changes in segmental duration, articulatory displacement, atriculatory velocity, and intrasyllabic coarticulation, and that these changes represent nonlinea…
Formant frequencies of some fixed-mandible vowels and a model of speech motor programming by predictive simulation
Physiological and Acoustic Correlates of Perceived Stress
In speech production, syllables that are stressed differ from those that are unstressed along at least four parameters: duration, fundamental frequency, overall intensity, and spectral composition. This paper reviews acoustic and physiological studies concerned with these features and how they might be accounted for by a single physiological mechanism. The perception of stress is then considered in the context of recent experiments that manipulat…
Effect of speaking rate on labial consonant-vowel articulation
A cinefluorographic study of vowel production
The Articulatory Implementation of the Breath-Group and Prominence
A theory has been proposed (Lieberman 1967) that accounts for some aspects of intonation in terms of two phonologic features, the breath-group and prominence. Acoustic and physiologic correlates of these features were derived by experimental procedures that made use of subglottal air pressure and flow measurements as well as acoustic analysis. Perceptual data indicated that listeners ‘decoded’ certain intonational signals by means of ‘motor theor…
A Perceptual Study of American English Diphthongs
This study utilized synthetic speech for describing the phonemic boundaries and the effects of formant course on the identification of / i, ai, au/. In the first experiment, synthesized formant transitions appropriate to classes of / i-ai/ and /au-o/ were presented to ten phonetically trained listeners for purposes of phoneme labelling. Results showed that preferred / i/ courses were from [ ] or [u] to [i, y, I], /ai/ courses from [a] to [I] and …
