Social perception of English irony
Irony plays an important role in social communication, but its perceived politeness and appropriateness can vary across linguistic backgrounds. This study investigated how first-language (L1) English speakers and advanced second-language (L2) English speakers (Chinese L1) evaluate ironic (sarcastic, teasing) versus literal statements in audio-visual conversations. Participants watched videos and rated them on politeness, appropriateness, and thei…
Digitally Empowered Assessment of Interactional Competence in a Second Language
As language assessment increasingly recognizes interaction as socially co‐constructed, interactional competence (IC) has emerged as a central construct for understanding learners’ ability to manage communication across social and cultural contexts. At the same time, digitally mediated communication environments and artificial intelligence (AI)‐powered conversational agents are transforming both interaction itself and the ways in which it can be a…
Second Language Interactional Competence in Roleplay
This study explores the potential of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) as an alternative to human interlocutors for assessing interactional competence (IC) in a second language (L2). Thirty L2 English speakers completed a 6‐item roleplay task designed to elicit refusals of requests, invitations, and offers, interacting with both a native‐speaking human interlocutor and GenAI (ChatGPT‐4o) 1 week apart. Four trained raters evaluated the au…

Comparing two formats of data-driven rating scales for classroom assessment of pragmatic performance with roleplays
Rating scales that language testers design should be tailored to the specific test purpose and score use as well as reflect the target construct. Researchers have long argued for the value of data-driven scales for classroom performance assessment, because they are specific to pedagogical tasks and objectives, have rich descriptors to offer useful diagnostic information, and exhibit robust content representativeness and stable measurement propert…

Refusing invitations and offers in second language Chinese
The present study investigates the role of proficiency in the development of second language (L2) Chinese learners’ ability to negotiate refusals of invitations and offers in conversational interactions. Fifty-four American English learners of L2 Mandarin Chinese at three proficiency levels, and 22 native speakers, completed a four-item naturalized roleplay task. Findings suggest positive effects of proficiency on L1 American English L2 Chinese l…

Intra-lingual pragmatic variation in Mandarin Chinese apologies
This study investigates regional and gender variations of apologies in Putonghua ‘Standard Mandarin’ and Guoyu ‘Taiwanese Mandarin’. Production data were elicited from 40 participants from northern Mainland China and 34 from Taipei using an oral discourse completion task. Results showed that speakers in both regions employed a similar sequence of strategies and demonstrated similar preferences for context-dependent strategies in their apologies, …
Developing L2 Pragmatic Competence in Mandarin Chinese
The present study explored the development of second language (L2) Chinese learners' ability to negotiate requests in interactions. It investigated the effect of proficiency on learners' use of request strategies and internal modifications and on their sequential realization of requests in L2 Chinese. Twenty‐four American English learners of L2 Mandarin Chinese at three different proficiency levels completed a three‐scenario role‐play task. The s…
