Who counts as supportive? A social network analysis of perceived support among Black/African American men with type 2 diabetes
Black/African American men experience a disproportionate burden of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), yet little is known about which people in their lives they actually experience as supportive. This study used personal (egocentric) network analysis with 1,181 Black/African American men with T2D, who together described 6,899 relationships. Multilevel modeling examined what makes a man perceive an individual person in his network as supportive. Because each …
Mapping Multilingual Voices
Research Findings: This study explores similarities between how different informants characterize language interactions in childhood bilingual educational settings. Spanish–English bilingual children (n = 120, 45.8% female) from pre-kindergarten through second grade (age range: 4–9 years; M = 6.33 years, SD = 1.09 years) were recruited from four elementary schools in central Texas. Three network assessments were employed: (1) teacher-reported cla…
Impact of Physical Activity on Smoking, Sleep Disorders, and Depression Among U.S. Adults
Smoking negatively impacts lung function and cardiovascular capacity, making physical activity (PA) more challenging and contributing to mental health issues. This study investigates the role of PA in mitigating the links between smoking, sleep disorders, and depressive symptoms in adults in the United States. Data from the 2017 to 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were examined. Participants were categorized by PA ad…
A tale of two discriminations
OBJECTIVE: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) disproportionately affects Black/African American men, with discrimination emerging as a critical factor influencing health outcomes through complex social pathways. This study examines how healthcare and everyday discrimination are differentially associated with diabetes self-management through social network mechanisms among this population. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1225 Black/African…
Academic Impairment From Sleep Difficulties
Sleep-related academic impairment is a common issue among college students and may be influenced by psychological and behavioral health factors. This study used cross-sectional data from the Spring 2021 American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment III (ACHA-NCHA III) to examine whether psychological distress, loneliness, and substance use were associated with academic impairment due to sleep difficulties among U.S. colle…
Social network characteristics as moderators between discrimination and mental health among Black/African American men with type 2 diabetes
Black/African American men experience a disproportionate burden of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and high exposure to discrimination, yet it is unclear whether social networks buffer discrimination’s effects on mental health. This study tested moderation by network characteristics among Black/African American men with T2D. In a cross-sectional online survey (February-June 2024), 1,225 Black/African American men with T2D completed validated measures of ev…
Overcoming barriers to blood glucose monitoring
Both observational learning and self-efficacy partially or fully mediate the relationship between barriers and testing. These findings underscore the importance of interventions aimed at enhancing social support and observational learning to overcome barriers and improve adherence to glucose monitoring among Black/African American men with T2D
Disparities of healthcare utilization in sexually transmitted diseases management
Objective: To identify patient and hospital factors, such as race and region, associated with increased sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) hospital charges, and emergency room (ER) usage for significant federal funding and research allocation. Methods: = 22,275) from 2016 to 2019. The sample's characteristics, the odds of an ER visit, and the association between an ER visit and healthcare utilization measured by hospital charges were examined b…
Making the connection
This mixed-methods study protocol investigates the role of social networks in Type 2 diabetes (T2D) self-management among Black/African American (B/AA) men, a population disproportionately affected by T2D. The study employs a convergent design, combining quantitative social network analysis with longitudinal qualitative interviews. A nationally representative sample of 1,200 B/AA men with T2D will complete an online survey assessing their social …
Associations of depressive symptoms, social engagement and support, and lifestyle behaviors among non-Hispanic black and Hispanic men with chronic conditions in the United States
Introduction Self-management of depressive symptoms is influenced by co-morbidity, social support, and health-related behaviors. Men are less likely to discuss depressive moods and seek healthcare. This study examines factors associated with depressive symptoms among non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic men ages ≥40 years with ≥1 chronic condition in the U. S. Methods Data from 1,907 non-Hispanic Black ( n = 1,117) and Hispanic ( n = 790) males with c…
The Association Between Health Belief Model Components and Self-Care Practices Among Black/African American Men with Type 2 Diabetes
This study investigates the impact of the Health Belief Model (HBM) constructs on self-care behaviors among Black/African American men with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). A cross-sectional survey was conducted from February to June 2024, involving 1225 Black/African American men aged 21 years or older who self-reported a T2D diagnosis. The survey included HBM constructs, and self-care behaviors measured using established scales. Statistical analyses, inc…
Health Disparities of Healthcare Utilization and Opioid Use Disorders Among Chronic Pain Patients
Mapping the Social Context of Type 2 Diabetes Management
Social networks play a crucial role in type 2 diabetes (T2D) management, yet limited research examines these dynamics among Black/African American men who face disproportionate T2D burden. This study investigated associations between social network characteristics and negative T2D outcomes among 1,225 Black/African American men with T2D. Participants completed an online survey assessing their social networks and T2D outcomes including low blood s…
Is gender dysphoria associated with increased hospital cost per stay among patients hospitalized for depression? Focus on the racial and regional variance in US hospitals
Introduction: Individuals with gender dysphoria do not identify with their sex assigned at birth and face societal and cultural challenges, leading to increased risk for depression, anxiety, and suicide. Gender dysphoria is a DSM-5 diagnosis but is not necessary for transition therapy. Additionally, individuals with gender dysphoria or who identify as gender diverse/nonconforming may experience "minority stress" from increased discrimination, lea…
Investigating the influence of working status changes on physical activity and non-communicable diseases in Korean middle-aged and older adults
This longitudinal study revealed that individuals engaged in or transitioning to employment displayed a reduced likelihood of regular PA. Moreover, those with work history, transitioning, or consistently working, exhibited increased vulnerability to all NCDs compared to those without work experience
Racial and Regional Disparities Surrounding In-Hospital Mortality among Patients with 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19)
Differences in Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, and Mental Health of the Older Population in South Korea Based on Marital Status and Gender
The primary purpose of the present study was to assess differences in physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), and mental health (i.e., depression, suicidal thoughts, and cognitive function) by marital status (i.e., married and widowed) within an aging population in South Korea. PA, SB, and mental health were evaluated in 9092 older adults by comparing the married group ( n = 5773, 73.2 ± 5.9 years, 63.5%) to the widowed group ( n = 3319,…

We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2020 data. We selected participants who answered Internet addiction-related questions as “Very much” (n = 241) and answered Internet addiction-related questions …
Re-Visiting Maximal Heart Rate Prediction Using Cross-Validation in Population Aged 7–55 Years
The primary purpose of the present study was to re-visit HR max prediction by two commonly used equations (i.e., Fox's and Tanaka's equation) compared to the direct measured HR max using the large sample size of Asians. The second aim of the study was to focus on suggesting new equations for the Asian population by separating gender and specific age groups. A total of 672 participants aged from 7 to 55 years were recruited for the study (male: 28…
