The Role of Community Engagement in Successful Recruitment of Research Participants During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Background: Our research team was in the process of recruiting American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) women for a community-based intervention to prevent alcohol-exposed pregnancy when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Safety measures adopted at the tribal, state, and national level required us to rethink and revise study protocols. We followed the principles of community-based participatory research, especially community engagement. The goal of thi…
Reach, Acceptability, and Sustainability of the Native Changing High-Risk Alcohol Use and Increasing Contraception Effectiveness Study (CHOICES) Intervention
American Indian (AI) women are at risk of alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP) due to the higher prevalence of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) and risky drinking. The Native Changing High-Risk Alcohol Use and Increasing Contraception Effectiveness Study (Native CHOICES) was implemented in partnership with a Northern Plains Tribal community to address the effectiveness of a brief, motivational interviewing-based intervention to reduce AEP risk among adult…
Feasibility and Acceptability of Using Ecological Momentary Assessment to Evaluate Alcohol Use with American Indian Women
This proof-of-concept project showed that EMA was both feasible and acceptable for collecting alcohol data from American Indian women. Additional studies are necessary to fully implement EMA with American Indian women to better understand the drinking motives, contexts, patterns, and risk factors in this population
Using concept mapping to identify opportunities for HPV vaccination efforts
Alcohol Consumption during Covid among Women with an Existing Alcohol-Use Disorder
Prior to the pandemic, our research team implemented a randomized controlled trial of an intervention to reduce risk for alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP) in American Indian women. When active recruitment for the in-person trial was paused due to COVID, the research team moved to conducting follow-up surveys with participants who had completed the intervention to better understand changes to their alcohol use during the pandemic. We collected surve…
Utilization of the Transtheoretical Model to Determine the Qualitative Impact of a Tribal Fasd Prevention Program
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to damaging effects on an infant’s health, including fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Project Changing High-risk alcOhol use and Increasing Contraception Effectiveness Study (CHOICES), a program developed to reduce alcohol-exposed pregnancies through decreased alcohol consumption and increased birth control use, has been implemented with success in a variety of populations. The CHOICES program was st…
Community Perspectives on Emergency Department Use and Care for American Indian Children
Applying the Theory of Reasoned Action to Understanding Teen Pregnancy with American Indian Communities
Preventing alcohol-exposed pregnancy among American-Indian youth
Research has determined that the prevention of alcohol-exposed pregnancies (AEP) must occur pre-conceptually with women, either by reducing alcohol intake in women planning pregnancy or at-risk for becoming pregnant, or by preventing pregnancy in women drinking at risky levels. One such AEP prevention programme with non-pregnant American Indian women is the Oglala Sioux Tribe (OST) CHOICES (Changing High-risk alcohOl use and Increasing Contracept…
Epidemiology of Substance-Exposed Pregnancies at One Great Lakes Hospital
Data from this project can be used in prevention efforts, including preconception care for women at risk for substance use and mental health issues
The Oglala Sioux Tribe CHOICES Program
Alcohol-exposed pregnancies are a health issue for many American Indian communities. The goal of this manuscript is to outline how an existing alcohol-exposed pregnancy prevention program with non-pregnant women (Project CHOICES) was modified to fit the needs and norms of an American Indian community. The Oglala Sioux Tribe CHOICES Program was developed and implemented using community feedback through initial meetings, reviewing materials, gather…
Establishing Survey Validity and Reliability for American Indians Through "Think Aloud" and Test-Retest Methods
The purpose of this study was to use a mixed-methods approach to determine the validity and reliability of measurements used within an alcohol-exposed pregnancy prevention program for American Indian women. To develop validity, content experts provided input into the survey measures, and a "think aloud" methodology was conducted with 23 American Indian women. After revising the measurements based on this input, a test-retest was conducted with 79…
Indirect and Direct Perceived Behavioral Control and the Role of Intention in the Context of Birth Control Behavior
Understanding Gender Roles in Teen Pregnancy Prevention among American Indian Youth
Gender ideology plays a large role in decisions about contraception and sexual activity for AI adolescents, and it is vital to include redefinitions of gender norms within AI teen pregnancy prevention program
Understanding Prenatal Health Care for American Indian Women in a Northern Plains Tribe
Early and regular prenatal care appointments are imperative for the health of both the mother and baby to help prevent complications associated with pregnancy and birth. American Indian women are especially at risk for health disparities related to pregnancy and lack of prenatal health care. Previous research has outlined a basic understanding of the reasons for lack of prenatal care for women in general; however, little is known about care recei…
Encouraging early preventive dental visits for preschool‐aged children enrolled in Medicaid
Findings were consistent with EPPM, which suggests this model is a potential tool for understanding parents' decisions about seeking preventive dental care for their young children. Future research should utilize quantitative methods to test this model
What Is the 'Extra' in Extra Care Housing
The article discusses key findings from a multidisciplinary study of ten remodelled extra care schemes for older people. It argues that the absence of a clear national definition of ‘extra care’ makes it difficult for older people, their relatives and social workers to dicide whether an extra case scheme is appropriate. Schemes were idiosyncratic. Only a minority provided an optional communal cooked lunch. A common problem was high care staff tur…
