  • Values-based recruitment in social care and healthcare

Open Access•Maria Teresa Ferazzoli, Kate Hamblin•ARTICLE•International Journal of Care and…•2026

Values-based recruitment (VBR) has been proposed as a potential solution to a number of workforce challenges in UK adult social care, which could, in turn, be applied to other national contexts facing similar issues. The review presented in this article uses a systematic approach to suggest that VBR has the potential to improve the recruitment and retention of staff in adult social care. • Rethinking street-level bureaucracy

Open Access•J Walsh, Maria Teresa Ferazzoli•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Policy•2025•Referencias: 27

This paper brings together Lipsky's street-level bureaucracy framework and the concept of everyday bordering to interrogate mechanisms through which diverse social care professions - working with migrant families - enact and/or resist the UK's hostile policies towards immigration. • The Colonised Self

    Open Access•J Walsh, Maria Teresa Ferazzoli•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 88

This paper draws on empirical data generated in the 'Everyday Bordering in the UK' project, with a focus on the experiences of people seeking asylum and hoping to establish a safe life in the UK. Specifically, we show that during the process of claiming asylum, people's experiences of waiting and displacement-practices inherent in UK immigration policies-work as time- and space-based dimensions of power that are imbued with colonial logic. Existi…

  • Portholes of Ethnography

Open Access•J Walsh, Asma Shahin Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•2023•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 24

Ethnography is, in essence, an approach to social research reliant on 'being there' and ethnographic approaches to the social world have been widely taken up in sociological research. In this research note, we share our UK-based experiences of ethnographic fieldwork with professional practitioners during the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic, when 'staying at home' was the antithesis of 'being there'. In doing so, we highlight opportunities…
