  • Choose the Method for Aggregating Religious Identities that Is Most Appropriate for Your Research

    Open Access•Conrad Hackett, P Schwadel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2018•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 22

Some U.S. surveys measure many religious identities, including detailed Protestant affiliations. Researchers must decide how to aggregate these diverse identities. There are now a variety of options for aggregating religious groups into categories. Depending on the research question, it may be appropriate to use one of the existing options or to develop an aggregation strategy tailored to the project in question

  • Comparing the RELTRAD and Born-Again/Evangelical Self-Identification Approaches to Measuring American Protestantism

Open Access•Gregory A Smith, Elizabeth Podrebarac Sciupac et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2018•Citada por: 20•Referencias: 15

The question of how Protestantism (including evangelicalism) is measured in social science research is of keen importance to those seeking to understand religion in American life. In this article, we compare and contrast two of the leading techniques for classifying Protestants. One of these approaches (the RELTRAD approach) categorizes respondents as evangelical Protestants, mainline Protestants, or black Protestants mainly on the basis of their…

  • Community organizing, schools, and the right to the city

    Gavin A Smith, Gregory A Smith•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2015•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

One of the central tenets of the neoliberal world view is that there is no alternative to market-based societies with their focus on competition, individualism, and the abandonment of social safety nets and environmental protections. This vision has become the new common sense. As neoliberal policies and practices have spread across the planet, communities and regions have been turned into winners and losers with seemingly little voice in the mat…

  • Dispelling Three Decades of ‘Educational Reform’

    Gavin A Smith, Gregory A Smith•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2013

One of the more remarkable public relations successes of the past two decades can be seen in the way neoliberals, and other supporters of an unfettered market economy, have portrayed their school reform efforts as in the interest of people otherwise excluded from the economy and the political process. A widely viewed film like Waiting for Superman, with its vilification of educators and public schools, suggests that only through the expansion of …

  • Demons, Greek and Roman

    Open Access•Gregory A Smith•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Demons have a long and continuous history from Homer through Late Antiquity. While there were important and sometimes divergent developments throughout the period, certain features recur with insistent frequency. These include a conception of demons as somehow “between” human beings and the higher gods, a close link between demons and the course of human events, a persistent but not exclusive association of demons with misfortune in particular, a…

  • Al-Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb

    Open Access•Gavin A Smith, Gregory A Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Strategic Security•2009•Citada por: 2

This paper is organized into four chapters that focus on the terrorist group Al Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). The four chapters examine different facets of the collective environment that have allowed AQIM to succeed and even thrive at times. The first chapter begins with Algeria's war of independence with the French. The second chapter focuses on the nomadic Tuareg people. It seeks to show how the Tuaregs were deprived by Fre…

  • Oxymoron or misplaced rectification

    Gregory Smith, Gregory A Smith•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2008•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

Throughout much of his career, Chet Bowers has taken as one of his primary responsibilities what Confucians call the “rectification of terms.” In Analects 13:3, Confucius is interviewed about what

  • Place‐based education

    Gavin A Smith, Gregory A Smith•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2007•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 5

Robert Stevenson identified four behavioural and programmatic regularities that have inhibited the implementation of environmental education as envisioned by the framers of the Belgrade Charter and Tbilisi Declaration. These include the presentation of standardised knowledge associated with established disciplines, reliance on teachers as primary information sources, assessment procedures based on ease of marking and justification, and the contro…

  • The Influence of Priests on the Political Attitudes of Roman Catholics

    Open Access•Gregory A Smith•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2005•Citada por: 19•Referencias: 22

For years, scholars in religion and politics have worked under the assumption that clergy wield significant political influence with their congregations. Until recently, however, this assumption had gone largely uninvestigated and undemonstrated. This article helps correct this shortcoming by analyzing the Notre Dame Study of Catholic Parish Life for evidence of priestly influence on the political attitudes of Catholic parishioners. Though the da…

  • Cultivating Care and Connection

    Gregory A Smith•ARTICLE•Educational Studies•2004•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 4

Feminists and ecofeminists argue that relatedness and the care that emerges from this underlie an ethical response to other people, beings, and the planet, itself. The ability and willingness to care may well be the matrix within which a society characterized by ecological sustainability and social justice can be cultivated. Educators concerned about moving our society in these directions must find ways to engender a sense of connectedness and re…

  • Place-Based Education

    Open Access•Gavin A Smith, Gregory A Smith•ARTICLE•Phi Delta Kappan•2002•Citada por: 82

One of the primary strengths of place-based education is that it can adapt to the unique characteristics of particular places, and in this way it can help overcome the disjuncture between school and children's lives that is found in too many classrooms, Mr. Smith points out. LAST SUMMER I spent a morning with eight or nine high school students who were members of an Upward Bound program based at Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon. The s…
