The earliest evidence for deformation of livestock horns
Predynastic beer production, distribution, and consumption at Hierakonpolis, Egypt
Hierakonpolis
Hierakonpolis (ancient Nekhen and modern Kom el Ahmar) is a major site of the Egyptian Predynastic and Early Dynastic Period, where on‐going excavations are revealing archaeological evidence for the evolution of social complexity and urban society, as well as the practices and manifestations of early royal power, including the maintenance of a menagerie of wild animals. More evidence for cat taming at the Predynastic elite cemetery of Hierakonpolis (Upper Egypt)
Continued excavations at the Predynastic elite cemetery HK6 at Hierakonpolis have yielded new evidence for the cultural control of cats during the Naqada IC-IIB period (c. 3800–3600 BC). In the same burial ground where evidence was previously found for the keeping of jungle cat (Felis chaus), a small pit was discovered containing six cats. The animals that were buried simultaneously, are a male and a female, and four kittens belonging to two diff…
Animal dung from arid environments and archaeobotanical methodologies for its analysis
Bioarchaeological studies of animal dung from arid environments provide valuable information on various aspects of life in ancient societies relating to land use and environmental change, and from the Neolithic onwards to the animal husbandry and the use of animals as markers of status and wealth. In this study we present the archaeobotanical analysis of animal gut contents from burials in the elite Predynastic cemetery HK6 at Hierakonpolis, Uppe…

Archaeobotanical studies at Hierakonpolis Locality HK6
Plant macroremains were separated from samples taken from nine tombs (1-3, 5-7, 9-11) in an elite cemetery at locality HK6 at Hierakonpolis. These tombs are dated to the Predynastic Naqada IIA period and the Early Dynastic Naqada A2-IIIC1 (c. 3800 – 3650 B. C./ 3200 – 3050 B. C.). Human and/or animal skeletal remains were found in all of these tombs. A total of 1984 plant macroremains were identified. This botanical assemblage has been attributed…

Fish remains from archaeological sites as indicators of former trade connections in the Eastern Mediterranean
