  • Resilience Among Small Community-based Organizations During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Shayna D Cunningham, Cándida Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2023

The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has created numerous challenges for many community-based organizations to sustain delivery of services and programs. This paper offers perspectives from leadership of three small community-based organizations serving diverse populations in the Hartford, Connecticut, region on how they were impacted and responded to disruptions during the first year of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. • Reaching Minority Women

    M Singer, Cándida Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•1993

Minority women are dramatically over represented among female HIV disease patients. They also are more likely to be single heads of household, have less access to basic support and survival resources, and are subject to ethnic/racial discrimination across health and social institutions. They are in worse health generally than are other women and have higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) that are co-factors for AIDS. They are more …

  • Puerto Rican Community Mobilizing in Response to the Aids Crisis

    M Singer, Cándida Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1991•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 9

Considerable attention has been focused on the collective response of the gay community to the spread of AIDS. Less is known about how other communities, especially those that have disproportionately high rates of HIV infection, have mobilized in response to the epidemic. Focusing on the work of a community based organization in Hartford, CT—the Hispanic Health Council—this paper examines the evolution of Puerto Rican organizational efforts to de…

  • Owning Aids

Open Access•M Singer, Zaida Castillo et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•1990•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 6

There have been various suggestions in both the mass media and in the social science literature that minority communities have not responded in a timely fashion to AIDS despite the disproportionate prevalence of the disease in these communities. A review of organizational response to AIDS in the Latino community, however, suggests that organizations at the local, regional, and natonal levels have overcome major hurdles, including lack of sufficie…

  • Sida

    Open Access•M Singer, Cándida Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology Quarterly•1990•Citada por: 41•Referencias: 52

Statistics on reported cases demonstrate clearly that AIDS is disproportionately prevalent among U.S. Latinos. To help clarify the meaning of this information, this article situates current epidemiological data within the sociocultural and socioeconomic contexts of Latinos living in the U.S. The purpose of this paper is to develop a fuller understanding of the Latino AIDS crisis by reviewing existing literature and new research findings on: (1) d…
