  • Social Context Matters for Turn‐Taking Dynamics

    Open Access•Cameron Cox, Riccardo Fusaroli et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Science•2025•Referencias: 121

Engaging in fluent conversation is a surprisingly complex task that requires interlocutors to promptly respond to each other in a way that is appropriate to the social context. In this study, we disentangled different dimensions of turn‐taking by investigating how the dynamics of child–adult interactions changed according to the activity (task‐oriented vs. freer conversation) and the familiarity of the interlocutor (familiar vs. unfamiliar). Twen…

  • Focus Prosody Varies by Phrase-Initial Tones in Seoul Korean

    Open Access•Yong-Cheol Lee, Sunghye Cho•ARTICLE•Languages•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 21

Production and perception experiments were conducted to examine whether focus prosody varies by phrase-initial tones in Seoul Korean. We also trained an automatic classifier to locate prosodic focus within a sentence. Overall, focus prosody in Seoul Korean was weak and confusing in production, and poorly identified in perception. However, Seoul Korean's focus prosody differed between phrase-initial low and high tones. The low tone group induced a…

  • The effect of prosodic focus varies by phrasal tones

Open Access•Yong-Cheol Lee, Yongcheol Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2019

This study examines the production and perception of corrective focus in South Kyungsang Korean, using phone number strings. It shows that focus prosody varies greatly by tonal pattern (HHL, HLL, LHT, LHL) within phrases. Prosodic focus in High-initial phrases was clearly produced and accurately recognized, compared to that in Low-initial phrases. Additionally, the identification rate of HLL was higher than that of HHL, mainly because the focused…

  • Tonal Patterns and Extrametricality of Japanese 2-Pattern Accent Systems

    Open Access•Sunghye Cho•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2016

This paper aims at providing a formal analysis of the tonal patterns of four Japanese dialects with n-pattern accent systems. Most of the dialects with n-pattern systems are spoken in the Southwestern part of Kyushu. These dialects share many characteristics but still show interesting differences in their tonal patterns. In this paper, I provide a new way of approaching two 2-pattern dialects, Kagoshima and Koshikijima Japanese, using extrametric…
