Mapping the mills of early industrial Britain, 1729–1836
This paper examines the capabilities and limitations of Mills of Britain, a recently compiled Historic Geographic Information System (HGIS) dataset documenting over 20,000 water- and wind-powered mills recorded on large-scale late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century maps. These mills not only ground grain to feed Britain's growing population but also provided the mechanical power underpinning industrial growth. By uniting this corpus into an…
Shaping landscapes and industry
Watermills have been an essential source of mechanical power for over two millennia. Their careful siting often took into account local hydrology, topography, and economic demand, attesting to the important place they held in premodern and early modern societies. This paper highlights the significance of Paul Bishop's work on mills over the last 20 years, which revealed that numerous historical watermills along Scottish rivers were closely locate…
Location, location, location
For more than three decades between the 1950s and the 1980s, W.H.K. (Keith) Turner was a valued colleague and teacher in the Department of Geography at University College, Dundee (later, the University of Dundee). During that time, he researched extensively on the industrial development of Dundee and its environs, as well as the linen industry in East-Central Scotland more generally. His approach, combining a detailed understanding of human geogr…

Technological change
Technological change over the roughly 2,000‐year period from the beginning of the Late Bronze Age ca. 1550 BCE to the seventh century CE is characterized by extraordinary diversity and heterogeneity. A survey article of this kind can therefore flag only some of the more significant aspects of those changes and their complexity.

Industrial Milling in the Ancient and Medieval Worlds
In 1934 and 1935, Lewis Mumford and Marc Bloch published two very different pioneering works in the history of technology, Technics and Civilization and "Avènement et conquêtes du moulin à eau," the first an ambitious attempt to trace the development of technology in human civilizations over several thousand years, the second a historical overview of the development of milling technology from Greco-Roman times to the end of the Middle Ages.1 What…

Indigenous People in Cyberspace
Although computing and telecommunications technologies are becoming increasingly integral to the work practices and everyday lives of indigenous people, these activities remain relatively unpublicized and untheorized. The author discusses a variety of computing and electronic networking projects undertaken by Australian Aboriginal and Native American people that address issues of central importance to all indigenous people—i.e. education, cultura…
Art, Science and Technology in an Expanded Field
The author suggests that new concepts in twentieth-century science not only provide commonalities between the arts, sciences and humanities, they also point to the emergence of a new philosophy of nature with some promising political, sociological and technological implications. These developments demand a thorough-going ethical practise and a fundamental reformulation of accepted notions of creativity, consciousness and natural and social organi…

Thus both Jomard (who climbed the pyramid) and Maspero (who apparently did not climb the pyramid, but relied upon Jomard's description) both say that the portion of the casing of the pyramid of Chephren, …
