  • Nobody there? On the non-existence of nobody in Mandarin Chinese and related issues

Open Access•Willow Paul, Waltraud Paul•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2021

The present article demonstrates how the so far unchallenged misanalysis within Chinese linguistics of a few, but central, data points has led to a distorted picture biasing, inter alia , the general typology of wh -in-situ languages as well as the crosslinguistic study of Quantifier Phrases. This is the case for méi yǒu rén ‘not exist person’, hěnshǎo yǒu rén ‘rarely exist person’, and zhǐ yǒu DP ‘only exist DP’, which are not nominal projection…

  • Existential and locative constructions in Mandarin Chinese

Willow Paul, Waltraud Paul et al.•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•2019

Despite previous studies (cf. among others Huang 1987. Existential sentences in Chinese and (in)definiteness. In Eric J. Reuland & Alice G.B. Ter Meulen (eds.), The representation of (In)definiteness , 226–253. Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press; Li, Yen-Hui Audrey. 1990. Order and constituency in Mandarin Chinese . • Topic Prominence

Open Access•Willow Paul, Waltraud Paul et al.•OTHER•The Wiley Blackwell Companion to…•2017

We assimilate the typological feature of topic prominence to established treatments of the left periphery. East Asian languages grouped together as topic‐prominent turn out to display important differences. In Japanese and Korean, the A‐domain extends higher than in Chinese, to include a fused FocusP/FiniteP projection. Descriptive properties sometimes associated with topic prominence include (1) obligatoriness of topics, (2) null topics, (3) ove…

  • Why particles are not particular

    Open Access•Willow Paul, Waltraud Paul•ARTICLE•Studia Linguistica•2014•Citada por: 17•Referencias: 2

Biberauer, Newton & Sheehan ( ) claim that clause-final particles are categorially deficient. This move is motivated by the fact that a number of VO languages - among them Mandarin Chinese - display sentence-final particles ( SFP s), which, when analysed as complementisers, violate the purportedly universal Final-over-Final Constraint ( FOFC ). The FOFC excludes structures where a head-final projection dominates a head-initial one. In contrast, t…

  • Adjectival modification in Mandarin Chinese and related issues

    Open Access•Willow Paul, Waltraud Paul•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2005•Citada por: 8

Against the background of recent typological studies postulating crosslinguistically valid hierarchies for the modifiers within the DP (cf. Scott 1998, 2002a, 2002b; Chao et al. 2001; Laenzlinger 2000), the present article argues that both types of modification available in Mandarin Chinese have to be taken into account: that where the subordinator de intervenes between the adjective and the head noun — ‘A de N’ — and the case of simple juxtaposi…

  • Functional categories, topic prominence, and complex sentences in Mandarin Chinese
