Acquisition of Arabic Guttural Consonants in Jordanian Arabic-English Bilingual Preschoolers
Aim: This study examines the early phonological acquisition of six Arabic guttural consonants (/χ/, /ʁ/, /ħ/, /ʕ/, /ʔ/, and /h/) in Jordanian Arabic-English (JAE) bilingual preschoolers. It investigates whether growing up in English-dominant environments affects the acquisition of these sounds, given that most gutturals are absent in English. Participants: Eighty typically developing children aged 2–6 years participated in this study: 40 JAE bili…

Negative scope ambiguity in serial verb constructions in Jordanian Arabic

Experiment 1 (n = 86) involves an acceptability judgment task where participants rated serialized and non-serialized verbs on a 5-point Likert scale. The results of this experiment indicate that speakers of Jordanian Arabic find the serialized verbs to be as attested as their non-serialized counterparts. Exp…
The syntax of serial verbs in Jordanian Arabic
Serial verb constructions have been the focus of much linguistic research, especially in studies on languages of East Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. This paper contributes to the growing body of research on the topic by providing empirical data from Jordanian Arabic, through an introspective study, which show that this dialect exhibits this type of phenomenon. The Jordanian Arabic data are examined against defined characteristics of ser…
Acoustics of long vowels in Arabic-speaking children with hearing impairments
The present study investigates formant frequencies and vowel space area in Jordanian hearing-impaired individuals who received cochlear implants. To achieve this task, they were compared with their hearing aids and normal-hearing peers. The study involved 60 participants aged between 7 and 11 years, consisting of 20 cochlear implant (CI) users, 20 hearing aid (HA) users, and 20 normal-hearing (NH) children. All participants were native speakers o…
The impact of L2 English on choice perception, interpretation, and preference for L1 Arabic speakers
This article compares risk tolerance of native Arabic speakers under two language contexts: their first language (L1 Arabic) and their foreign language (L2 English). We aim to evaluate whether thinking in a foreign language actually reduces the negative effects of cognitive biases, such as loss aversion and mental accounting, on financial decision-making. Toward this aim, we conducted two experiments in which the risk tolerance levels of 144 part…
