  • The category internal structure in Chinese-speaking people with aphasia

    Open Access•Mengmeng Hu, Hui Chang•ARTICLE•Language and Cognition•2026

Based on a semantic verbal fluency task, this study investigated the category internal structure in Chinese-speaking people with aphasia. The results show that the aphasia patients had a similar category internal structure to the healthy controls. For one thing, the patients produced basic-level and subordinate concepts at a similar rate to healthy controls. For another, the top 10 correct responses made by the patients and healthy controls were …

  • Air pollution’s toll on adverse birth outcomes

Open Access•Hui Chang, Wanting Sun et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Despite extensive global evidence linking air pollution to adverse birth outcomes, a comprehensive synthesis of China-specific epidemiological insights—particularly across its regionally diverse pollution landscapes and susceptible populations—remains limited. This systematic review integrates evidence from Chinese epidemiological and retrospective studies (2011–2023) retrieved via PubMed, Web of Science, and CNKI, to address critical gaps in con…

  • Native language phonological and phonetic influences on second language perception of Vietnamese tones

Open Access•Juqiang Chen, Ailing Qin et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2025

This study examines first language (L1) phonological and phonetic influences on the perception of Vietnamese tones by Mandarin speakers learning Vietnamese as a second language (L2) in light of the Perceptual Assimilation Model. Participants were divided into two groups according to their length of classroom instruction, i.e. beginning (two months) and experienced (two years) learners. They first discriminated 15 Vietnamese tone contrasts and the…

  • Multiple Constraints on Second Language Processing of English Dative Alternation

Keshu Xiang, Hui Chang•ARTICLE•Language Learning and Development•2023

The present study investigates the multiple constraints on the processing of English dative alternation by Chinese EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners. The intermediate and advanced learners completed an acceptability judgment task which was composed of 30 dative alternations selected from a spoken corpus. The results showed that the intermediate learners were constrained by only one predictor (pronominality of Recipient), whereas the ad…

  • Testing simplification in translated and creative writing texts

Juqiang Chen, Hui Chang•ARTICLE•Across Languages and Cultures•2023

Translational language has been reported to have unique characteristics, or translation universals, as compared to native non-translational production. One of the most widely studied features is simplification, i.e., translated texts tend to be less complex than non-translational texts. This study tested this hypothesis by comparing the translated and creative writing texts produced by a single author, Robert van Gulik, on the same topic (Judge D…

  • Transfer and unlearning of topic prominence by Chinese learners of English

Hui Chang, Lilong Xu•ARTICLE•IRAL - International Review of…•2022

Chinese allows both gapped and gapless topic constructions without their usage being restricted to specific contexts, while English only allows gapped topic constructions which are used in certain contexts. In other words, Chinese uses ‘topic prominence’, whereas English does not. The contrast between English and Chinese topic constructions poses a learnability problem for Chinese learners of English. This paper uses an empirical study investigat…

  • Multidimensional Factors Affecting Successful Aging among Empty-Nesters in China Based on Social-Ecological System Theory

Open Access•Hui Chang, Jia Zhou et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

This study is an important attempt to explore the successful aging of empty-nesters in China. Because this study is based on social-ecological system theory, it confirms the important role of individual characteristics of older adults and their surrounding environment in achieving successful aging. Therefore, we should pay attention not only to the individual characteristics of the elderly, but also to the role of the surrounding environment on t…

  • Asymmetries of null subjects and null objects in L1-English and L1-Japanese learners' Chinese

    Open Access•Hui Chang, Lina Zheng•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 17

Based on the HSK Dynamic Composition Corpus, this study investigated the use of Chinese null arguments by advanced adult L1-English and L1-Japanese learners with Chinese native speakers as a baseline. Several asymmetries were found. First, the learners produced many more null subjects than null objects. Second, null subjects were mainly animate, while null objects were mainly inanimate. Third, more null subjects were used in non-matrix clauses th…
