Economic intimate partner violence and its co-occurrence with physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence among youth
Partner economic abuse is an understudied form of intimate partner violence (IPV) that is increasingly considered to coincide with physical and/or sexual IPV (i.e., contact IPV), and can hinder help-seeking. This overlap is not well-understood, and measurement for economic IPV remains limited across global settings. This mixed methods study examines 1) measurement performance of an economic IPV scale; 2) prevalence of current economic IPV and con…
A systematic review of microfinance interventions and violence against women
Intimate partner violence trajectories over a 1-year period in a population-based cohort of women in Kenya
INTRODUCTION: The global evidence base on intimate partner violence (IPV) prevalence and risk factors is predominantly cross-sectional, limiting clarity in changes over time. Prospective cohort data can inform trajectories, as is needed to guide prevention efforts. AIMS: This study characterises (1) the prevalence of past-year IPV and trajectories among a cohort at two time points spanning 1 year and (2) individual and household factors associate…
Intimate partner violence help-seeking attitudes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
These findings reiterate the need to dismantle harmful gender systems and promote survivor-centered services. Confidence in services and corresponding attitudes favorable of seeking help are necessary to promote help-seeking for this leading form of gender-based violence
Nutritional Inequality and Policy Targeting in South Asia
How much intra‐household inequality is there in nutritional outcomes, and what does this mean for policy targeting? Using Demographic and Health Survey data for the South Asia region, we show that two‐thirds of undernourished individuals live in households with others who are not undernourished. Within‐household inequality contributes almost as much to overall nutritional inequality as between‐household inequality. While wealth is significantly c…
It Takes Two
The role of women’s agency in improving wellbeing outcomes has been emphasized by a large literature which, in turn, promoted development policies towards reducing gender disparities. For South Asia, a region with high levels of gender inequality, this paper assesses the correlations of women’s agency, a key component in their empowerment, with women’s health and that of their children, and with other outcomes, such as domestic violence. Followin…
Measuring Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso
There are multiple tools to measure women’s economic empowerment but limited information exists about their cross-cultural validity and reliability. This study assesses the psychometric properties of ten questions measuring two dimensions of women’s economic empowerment. It uses cross-sectional data from six low-and-middle-income settings: Kinshasa and Kongo Central (Demographic Republic of Congo), Kenya, Lagos and Kano (Nigeria), and Burkina Fas…
Who are the “vanguard” women? Strategies for identifying women going against economic participation norms across 49 low- and middle-income countries
Gender-based violence during Covid-19 among adolescent girls and young women in Nairobi, Kenya
INTRODUCTION: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) disproportionately experience gender-based violence (GBV), which can increase during emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A cohort of youth ages 15-24 in Nairobi, Kenya was surveyed at three time points over an 18-month period prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic: June-August 2019 (prepandemic), August-October 2020 (12-month follow-up) and May 2021 (18-month follow-up). We cha…
Forced Sex and Early Marriage
This mixed-methods study uses baseline data from a program evaluation in the Democratic Republic of Congo to examine two outcomes of interest: self-reported exposure to forced sex and belief that a girl's community would force her to marry her hypothetical rapist, for married and unmarried 13- to 14-year-old girls ( n = 377). Married girls are more likely to report both outcomes. Qualitative in-depth interviews with girl participants ( n = 30) an…
Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour to Understand Motivation to Register Births in Lombok, Indonesia
Despite government interest in promoting birth registration, more than a third of Indonesian children do not have a birth certificate, affecting the realisation of both their human and citizen rights. While barriers to registering children's births in Indonesia have been assessed, there is limited research on how communities perceive the importance of having a birth certificate. This study used focus group discussions to explore parental motivati…
Cultural Attitudes toward Postpartum Depression in Dhaka, Bangladesh
Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, yet in many cultures, it remains unaddressed and unacknowledged. Postpartum depression is particularly delicate because of its association with gender and expectations of motherhood. This ethnographic study in Dhaka, Bangladesh sought to understand local perceptions of postpartum depression and cultural influences around mental health care seeking. The results describe the role of culture a…
