  • Fashioning Diaspora

    Vanita Reddy•BOOK•Fashioning Diaspora•2021

"In her insightful study, Fashioning Diaspora, Vanita Reddy carefully maps how transnational itineraries of Indian beauty and fashion shaped South Asian American cultural identities and racialized belonging from the 1990s through the first decade of the twenty-first century. She observes how diasporic subjects engage with and respond to various encounters with Indian beauty and fashion. One of the first books to consider beauty and fashion as a p…

  • Femme Migritude

Vanita Reddy, Ashna Ali et al.•ARTICLE•Minnesota Review•2020

This article examines the queer feminist Afro-Asian poetics and politics of spoken word and performance artist Shailja Patel’s 2006 onewoman show and 2010 prose poem, both titled Migritude. Patel’s migritude poetics resonates with and departs from much contemporary migritude writing, particularly with respect to the genre’s focus on a global-North-based, black Atlantic African diaspora. The article draws attention to a “brown Atlantic,” in which …

  • Affect, Aesthetics, and Afro-Asian Studies

    Vanita Reddy•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian American Studies•2017•Referencias: 1

Affect, Aesthetics, and Afro-Asian Studies Vanita Reddy (bio) This JAAS editors' forum on "Asian American Studies in the Age of Black Lives Matter" provides a timely occasion to examine the limitations and possibilities for past and ongoing cross-racial solidarities, and of doing so through an explicitly queer feminist framework. I understand this framing of Afro-Asian solidarity as continuing the unfinished political project of dismantling heter…

  • Afro-Asian Intimacies and the Politics and Aesthetics of Cross-Racial Struggle in Mira Nair’s Mississippi Masala

    Vanita Reddy•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian American Studies•2015•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 2

In this article, I deploy the analytic of intimacy in order to critically reexamine South Asian American filmmaker Mira Nair’s groundbreaking film Mississippi Masala (1991). I define intimacy as the colonial management of sex, on the one hand, and as the inaccessible and unseen excesses of such forms of management, such as alliances, affections, and feelings of close familiarity among differently racialized subjects, on the other. I show that the…

  • Jhumpa Lahiri's Feminist Cosmopolitics and the Transnational Beauty Assemblage

    Vanita Reddy•ARTICLE•Meridians•2013•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 3

This essay examines Indian American writer Jhumpa Lahiri's literary engagements with cosmopolitan Indian beauty and style in her short stories "Sexy" and "Interpreter of Maladies" (2003). It situates these engagements as part of a transnational beauty assemblage, a heterogeneous set of transnational cultural flows of Indian beauty and fashion, first in order to map the transnational dimensions of Indian fashion and beauty, which have remained und…

  • The Nationalization of the Global Indian Woman

    Vanita Reddy•ARTICLE•South Asian Popular Culture•2006•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 10

This article examines various image‐texts of Indian female beauty in Femina, India's most widely circulating English‐language women's magazine. It argues that in Femina, race (calibrated through whiteness, brownness and even Indianness) and gender (calibrated through normative femininity) intervene in certain epistemologies about India, the West and ‘the world’. In order to posit these ‘geographies of beauty,’ the first part of this article shows…
