Strategies of Translation
The term “translation strategy” holds an important place in translation studies, yet its meaning often intertwines with related terms like “technique,” “method,” and “procedure.” This ambiguity stems from the different perspectives used to examine these terms, including textual, cognitive, contextual, and problem‐solving orientations. This text seeks to clarify the distinctions between these terms by situating each within its practical and theore…
Two audiences, two standards
This study investigates how bilingual (Chinese-English) and monolingual (English) audiences evaluate classical Chinese poetry translations, comparing human and GPT-4 outputs. Using mixed methods (ratings, qualitative comments), 19 bilingual and 19 monolingual readers assessed five translations (four human, one GPT-4) for each of six classical Chinese poems. Findings revealed two distinct, audience-specific standards. Bilingual readers, applying a…
Workflow matters
Large language models (LLMs) have shown significant potential in translation tasks but often struggle with literary texts. This study compares professional human translations with translations produced by two AI-driven systems that coordinate multiple LLM-based agents. The first system mimics professional human translation practice, with distinct drafting and revision phases. The second redesigns the process specifically for LLMs’ capabilities, b…
Echoes of self
Retranslation creates new versions of previously translated texts, documenting shifts in linguistic preferences, market needs, and ideological environments over time. Self-retranslation—when translators revise their own prior work—remains an uncommon and understudied phenomenon. This research examines five English novels that received second Chinese translations by their original translators 8–27 years after initial publication. Using an AI-assis…
Beyond binary oppositions
This study synthesizes scholarly perspectives on China’s cultural translation strategies through qualitative meta-synthesis of 650 research articles from leading Chinese academic journals (2001–2020). Using Lasswell’s communication model, the study analyses five dimensions: stakeholders, content selection, dissemination channels, audiences, and impact assessment. Findings reveal that successful cultural translation balances competing priorities r…
Man or machine? Comparing the difficulty of human translation versus neural machine translation post-editing
This study aims to compare neural machine translation (NMT) post-editing and human translation in terms of task difficulty while considering source text (ST) complexity and machine translation (MT) quality levels, two factors that have been rarely examined in previous comparison studies. Data were obtained from 60 trainee translators concerning the perceived and objective difficulties of post-editing and human translation tasks and the participan…
Bibliography-based quantitative translation history
Compared with qualitative methods, quantitative methods can help detect and interpret patterns and regularities in translation history. However, quantitative methods rarely have been used in translation history research, mostly for lack of statistical data. The highly structured nature of bibliographical data and their availability make them an ideal data source for quantitative history. Drawing on the discipline of book history, this paper intro…
Measuring translation difficulty
Accurate assessment of a text’s level of translation difficulty is critical for translator training, accreditation and research. Traditionally, people rely on their general impression to gauge a text’s translation difficulty level. If the evaluation process is to be more effective and the results more objective, an instrument needs to be developed. Then two basic research questions must be answered: what to measure and how to measure it. The pote…
Strategies of Translation
The term “strategy” in “translation strategies” is often used synonymously with such terms as “procedure,” “technique,” “method,” “tactic,” “approach,” and so forth.
Think-Aloud-Based Translation Process Research
Mainly structured around issues revealed in a questionnaire survey among 25 eminent translation process researchers worldwide, this paper deals with methodological issues in think-aloud-based translation process research from two perspectives: theoretical and practical. It argues that there is no strong evidence suggesting that TAP significantly changes or influences the translation process, though TAP's validity and completeness in a specific st…
