Open Access•Theodore Samore, Richard Sosis et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Human Sciences•2026

Researchers have long speculated about the evolutionary benefits of religiosity. One explanation for the evolution of religious ritual is that rituals signal commitment to co-religionists. As a major domain of prosocial behaviour, alloparental care – or care directed at children by non-parents – is a plausible benefit of religious signalling. The religious alloparenting hypothesis posits that parents who signal religious commitment receive greate…

    Open Access•B Schaffnit, A E Page et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Human Sciences•2022•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 13

Success in marriage markets has lasting impacts on women's wellbeing. By arranging marriages, parents exert financial and social powers to influence spouse characteristics and ensure optimal marriages. While arranging marriages is a major focus of parental investment, marriage decisions are also a source of conflict between parents and daughters in which parents often have more power. The process of market integration may alter parental investmen…

  • The Partition of Ireland

    Open Access•Robert Lynch•BOOK•Partition of Ireland•2019

Partition represents the most fundamental revolution in modern Irish history. By 1925 the country had been divided into two states embodying rival religious and political identities, an outcome unthinkable only a decade before. While often analysed through the lens of elite high politics, partition was by definition a mass participation event, where decision making was shaped by elections, propaganda and savage acts of violence in defence of or i…

  • Integration involves a trade-off between fertility and status for World War II evacuees

    Open Access•Robert Lynch, M Rius-riepen et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2019•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 51

Understanding how refugees integrate into host societies has broad implications for researchers interested in intergroup conflict and for governments concerned with promoting social cohesion. Using detailed records tracking the movements and life histories of Finnish evacuees during World War II, we find that evacuees who intermarry are more likely to be educated, work in professional occupations, marry someone higher in social status and remain …
