  • Ultra-processed food intake and impairment across multiple cognitive domains in nationally representative older U.S. adults

Open Access•Heejin Lee, Elizabeth Ludwig‐Borycz et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Introduction: Ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption, which accounts for more than 50% of energy intake in the U.S., has steadily increased among older adults over the past decade. UPF consumption is associated with overall cognitive decline, but few studies have examined the associations between UPF consumption and individual cognitive domains. In this study, we examined associations between UPF consumption and impairment in executive function, …

  • The impact of officer tenure on injury outcomes in law enforcement encounters

Open Access•Kenneth Lomenzo, Md Akramul Hasan et al.•ARTICLE•The Police Journal Theory…•2025

Police use-of-force encounters, though rare, pose serious injury risks. This study examines whether officer tenure predicts injury outcomes for both officers and suspects during use-of-force incidents. Using logistic regression on 762 Miami-Dade cases (2002–2006), this study finds that officer tenure was not linked to officer injury but negatively predicted suspect injury. Experienced officers may manage encounters more effectively, reducing harm…

Sean Patrick Roche, Heejin Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Justice Quarterly•2024

Self-control, perceived procedural justice, and moral foundations are prominent theoretical constructs in the criminological literature. However, existing measures of each are long. Long scales crowd questionnaires, increase cognitive burden, and lengthen completion times. Using a set of heuristic guidelines for scale construction, we develop short measures of self-control, procedural justice, and moral foundations and then test experimentally wh…

  • Understanding social sustainability

The hoseo Archaeological Society, Heejin Lee•ARTICLE•The hoseo Archaeological Society•2022

One of the cardinal global issues of our time is to ferret out determinants of sustainability of human society. Archaeology has long identified and addressed endogenous and exogenous variables and mechanisms which are keys to elucidating continuity and termination of past societies. This critical review addresses a brief overview of some major theoretical constructs – overshoot, diminishing marginal returns and resilience theory – as they are rel…

Heejin Lee, Justin T Pickett et al.•ARTICLE•Justice Quarterly•2022

From Columbine to Sandy Hook to Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the American public has repeatedly witnessed the carnage and tragic consequences of mass school shootings. Using a national survey of American adults (N = 1,100) conducted between May 30 and June 6, 2018 in the aftermath of the Parkland tragedy, this project explores public opinion on why these events occur. Informed by sociological scholarship on social movements and framing, the analysis…

  • A robbery is a robbery is a robbery? Exploring crime specificity in official police incident data

Cory P Haberman, Jeffrey E Clutter et al.•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2022

Police crime data guide police operations, direct funding, underpin theory testing and policy evaluation, aide private sector decisions, and inform the public. Those applications would benefit from greater crime specificity. The National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) should improve police crime data specificity. Using robbery incident data (n = 1,341) with NIBRS variables and narrative reports from the Cincinnati Police Department and q…

Headache and allergic rhinitis (AR) are common in children and often co-occur. We investigated the clinical characteristics of pediatric headaches and the association of AR and chronic headaches. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients admitted to our pediatric inpatient and outpatient clinics with complaints of headache between January 2017 and June 2020 for headache-specific history, AR signs and symptoms, allergy skin prick…

  • Contemporary Classics? The Early Onset of Influence of Articles Published in Criminology and Criminal Justice Journals, 2010–2015

Amanda Graham, Travis C Pratt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice…•2019

Citation analysis is a valuable method for tracking the growth and transmission of scientific knowledge. In criminology and criminal justice, such analyses tend to be focused on “classic” works or on highly cited scholars over many years. As an alternative approach, we focus on work that has been cited rather quickly – what we term the “early onset” of impact. In doing so, we identified 221 of the most highly cited peer-reviewed articles, authore…

    Open Access•Heejin Lee, Steve Sawyer•ARTICLE•Time & Society•2010•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 51

Through this article we draw on concepts of time and space to help us theorize on the uses of information and communication technologies in work and for organizing. We do so because many of the contemporary discussions regarding work and organization are usually, and too often implicitly, drawing on rudimentary understandings of these concepts. Our focus here is to advance beyond simplistic articulations and to provide a more conceptually sound a…

Time is often mentioned as a key aspect of organizational culture and organizational change. However, the role of time has rarely been explored in direct relation to organizational change. This article presents a case in which time was used as a catalyst for organizational change. The case shows how time can play a role in organizational change. In the early 1990s, one of the largest conglomerates in Korea introduced a new temporal scheme, which …

This paper relies on interviews, documentary material, and other sources to analyze the potentials of and constraints on North Korea's ICT development. We find substantial interest in ICT diffusion at high levels in the government, which has consistently promoted economically focused ICT programs and projects, while severely constraining political uses of ICT. Our assumption is that comparisons of this kind offer heuristic insights into the underlying dynamics of contemporary digital media industry change. We take the view that media industry transition can usefully analyze digital media transformations through a political-economic lens, together with more specific cultural frames for polic…

Using published and other data, this paper explores the actions and factors contributing to this diffusion from three viewpoints: government, private sector, and social. We suggest that the matching of demand and supply is the most important factor in the fast diffusion of broadband in Korea. In particular, fierce infrastructure competition led…
