  • Egg Theory's Early Style

    Grace Lavery•ARTICLE•TSQ Transgender Studies Quarterly•2020•Citada por: 2

This essay contemplates an enduring form of reasoning it titles “egg theory”: the type of reasoning that trans people use, prior to transition, to prove transition's impossibility or fruitlessness. It follows this reasoning in a critical and ironic framing in the work of the novelist and critic Sybil Lamb and then, in a less ironic mode, through some essays of Eve Sedgwick and, more broadly, the tranche of queer theory that her work continues to …

  • Strategic Inessentialism

    Jules Gill-Peterson, Grace Lavery•ARTICLE•TSQ Transgender Studies Quarterly•2020•Referencias: 1

The following introduction provides an overview to the Dossier on COVID-19, curated by Jules Gill-Peterson and Grace Lavery. This introduction explores how the pandemic has intensified the inessential denotation grafted onto trans people's material lives through health care, policing, incarceration, immigration, and racism. The ongoing crisis in academic labor and its uncertain pandemic futures are, similarly, an important place for trans studies…

  • Fear of Commitment

Open Access•Grace Lavery, Grace Elisabeth Lavery•ARTICLE•Victorian Literature and Culture•2020•Referencias: 1

What does it mean to commit? And why are men stereotypically afraid to do it? At some point in the last, say, sixty years, commitment-phobia displaced sexual neurosis as the acceptable euphemism through which men could talk about (or at least be talked about as though they talked about) the obsessive fear of castration that, from Ovid to Freud, took as its sign the phallophagic vagina. Thus, in one of the key contemporary representations of male …

  • Trans Realism, Psychoanalytic Practice, and the Rhetoric of Technique

    Grace Lavery•ARTICLE•Critical Inquiry•2020•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 4

I argue that, in George Eliot’s early, definitive statement of realism in the seventeenth chapter of Adam Bede, realism will only have been accomplished when readers have learned not merely to respect, but to desire, the dysphorically sexed bodies of others. In this sense, I argue, realism shares a central tenet with two of the more controversial and, frankly, neglected dimensions of Freudian thinking—which Sigmund Freud himself took to be indipe…

Grace Lavery, Grace Elisabeth Lavery et al.•BOOK•Quaint, Exquisite•2019

From the opening of trade with Britain in the 1850s, Japan occupied a unique and contradictory place in the Victorian imagination, regarded as both a rival empire and a cradle of exquisite beauty. Quaint, Exquisite explores the enduring impact of this dramatic encounter, showing how the rise of Japan led to a major transformation of Western aesthetics at the dawn of globalization.Drawing on philosophy, psychoanalysis, queer theory, textual critic…

  • The King's Two Anuses

    Grace Lavery•ARTICLE•differences•2019•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 9

The King's Two Anuses: Trans Feminism and Free Speech" critically examines the discourses of trans feminism and free speech absolutism as they have converged in a number of public controversies in the wake of the 2016 election of Donald Trump. It argues that the crisis of democratic institutions precipitated by that election revealed the surprising susceptibility of the dominant strains of critical and queer theory to cooptation by the far right …
