Polish Refugees in British Lunatic Asylums, 1836–1879
Drawing on public and organisational records, private correspondence, memoirs, and asylum documentation, this study seeks to explore responses in Britain to mental health problems among Polish refugees from the 1830 November Uprising, and their pathways into British lunatic asylums. Pigeons are often considered a nuisance in urban environments, leading to the attempted control or eradication of their populations. This study explored the perceptions of 246 staff members employed on the University of South Africa's Muckleneuk campus to ascertain the extent and nature of the perceived pigeon problem, suggested control methodologies and their anticipated results.
