Thermal Security and the Lived Experience of Urban Heat Waves
This article explores the concept of thermal security as an analytical lens for understanding how individuals experience, interpret, and respond to urban heat waves. Drawing on Anthony Giddens' notion of ontological security, thermal security refers to the continuity and reliability of safe and comfortable thermal conditions that allow people to sustain everyday routines and a sense of existential stability. Through a systematic review of 26 qual…
Wildfires and social capital
Wildfires pose an escalating environmental and social challenge, particularly in regions vulnerable to climate change and resource constraints. This study examines the influence of social capital in mitigating the impacts of wildfires in Chile, a middle-income country with significant socio-environmental vulnerabilities. Using survey data collected from 10,386 households affected by the 2023 and 2024 wildfire seasons, we analyze household-level i…
Barcelona residents’ concerns of heatwaves, air pollution, and noise
Environmental stressors pose significant threats to human well-being, especially in urban areas. While extensive research—particularly in the United States—has documented higher exposures in socially vulnerable neighborhoods, studies that examine and compare residents’ perceptions of multiple environmental risks, while also accounting for actual exposure levels and neighborhood characteristics, remain relatively more limited. Our study addresses …
Breathing dirty air, struggling in school
Air pollution has been linked to various health problems in children, including respiratory and neurological issues. Existing research has also found that exposure to air pollution can affect children's cognitive ability and academic performance, with some studies showing a decrease in test scores and grade point averages associated with increased exposure to hazardous air pollution. This study examined the association between air pollution and c…
Are the school choices of indigenous students affected by discrimination? Evidence from Chile
A common criticisms of school choice programs is that, instead of improving student achievement, they would increase school segregation. Parents may use different criteria to choose a school, such as proximity, school quality, or the school's ethnic/racial composition. As a result, the system would be segregated based on the parent's preferences. This research examines the school preferences of indigenous parents and whether ethnic discrimination…

Breathing Clean Air or Cheaply Heating Your Home
Cities in southern Chile face serious environmental pollution due to extensive use of firewood for heating and cooking. Lack of access to cleaner energy fuel, low-efficiency building materials, and a cold climate exacerbate the problem, which increases the deforestation of the native forests of Patagonia. While environmental justice research has established clear links between air pollution hazards and vulnerable populations, little is known abou…
Who buys certified firewood? Individual determinants of clean fuel adoption for promoting the sustainable energy transition in southern Chile
Another one breathes the dust. The relation between severe air pollution episodes and school attendance in southern Chile
The intermediate-sized cities of southern Chile experience days of high pollution levels every winter due to the use of wood-burning stoves. Several studies have analysed the factors that hinder energy transition and the social acceptance of measures to improve air quality, the consequences of which are disturbing. However, they have mainly focused on health issues without considering the social impacts of air pollution. This study aims to assess…
Do Large-Scale Forestry Companies Generate Prosperity in Indigenous Communities? The Socioeconomic Impacts of Tree Plantations in Southern Chile
In Wallmapu, Colonialism and Capitalism Realign
On March 27, 2021, unknown attackers ambushed a press team working with Chile’s main television channel on the road between Tirua and Canete in Arauco province, in the Bio Bio region. The area is a
The data revolution comes to higher education
Enrolment in higher education has risen dramatically in Latin America, especially in Chile. Yet graduation and persistence rates remain low. One way to improve graduation and persistence is to use data and analytics to identify students at risk of dropout, target interventions, and evaluate interventions' effectiveness at improving student success. We illustrate the potential of this approach using data from eight Chilean universities. Results sh…
School choice and parents’ preferences for school attributes in Chile
Covid-19 and Indigenous peoples in Chile
This research investigates whether Indigenous Populations are disproportionately vulnerable to COVID-19 infection and deaths in Chile. To answer this question, we use a regression model to analyze data from the Chilean government. Our analysis indicates that municipalities with a higher proportion of Indigenous people evinced higher rates of infection and deaths to COVID-19. Indigenous groups were not only highly affected at the beginning of the …

Does Achievement Rise Fastest with School Choice, School Resources, or Family Resources? Chile from 2002 to 2013
Debates in education policy draw on different theories about how to raise children's achievement. The school competition theory holds that achievement rises when students can choose among competing schools. The school resources theory holds that achievement rises with schools' resources per student. The family resources theory holds that achievement rises as parents become more educated and earn higher incomes. We test all three theories in Chile…

Examining Patterns of Air Quality Perception
Various medium-sized cities in southern Chile are saturated by air pollution caused by woodsmoke. In this study, we developed a segmentation model to assess the public's perceptions, understanding of health risks and emotional responses to poor air quality. To date, this is the first segmentation model dealing with public perception in cities contaminated by woodsmoke. A survey ( N = 489) was conducted in Temuco and Padre las Casas, Chile, which …
