Eugene N Lane, Eugene Lane et al.•BOOK•Cybele, Attis, and related cults•1996

This volume brings together articles on the cult of the mother-goddess Cybele and her consort Attis, from the emergence of the religion in Anatolia through its expansion into Greece and Italy to the latest times of the Roman Empire and its farthest extent west, the Iberian Peninsula. It combines the work of established scholars with that of young researchers in the field, and represents a truly international perspective. The reader will find trea…

The scarce literary evidence as well as the abundant archaeological material give us different versions o…

  • A Unique Representation of Mithras

    M J Vermaseren•ARTICLE•Vigiliae Christianae•1950

Among the numerous monuments of the bull-killing Mithras, whose cult mainly spread in the capital of the Roman empire, there is one which immediately strikes the eye by the abnormal way in which the artist has rendered the Persian god. This monument is a white marble relief (H. 0.93 Br. 0.74 L. 0.28) which has in fact remained hidden from the eyes of scholars for some centuries but which I am now able to publish. During an interview at Rome the l…
