  • Assessing heat exposure and its effects on farmer health, harvest yields, and nutrition

Open Access•Sandra Barteit, Windpanga Aristide Ouédraogo et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2025

Rising temperatures in Africa present an increasing threat to agricultural productivity and public health, particularly among subsistence farming communities reliant on rain-fed agriculture. Heat exposure can impair farmers' work capacity, disrupt harvests, and heighten health risks, especially for young children vulnerable to undernutrition. The Heat to Harvest (H2H) study investigates how environmental heat exposure influences farmers' physiolo…

Open Access•Charlotte Muller, Windpanga Aristide Ouédraogo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Background: Climate change leads to more frequent and severe extreme weather events including floods, heatwaves, heavy rainfalls, and droughts. In contrast to the majority of research on weather extremes in sub-Saharan Africa, which focus primarily on how a lack of rainfall causes droughts, this paper aims to elucidate the effect of flooding on harvest failure in rural Burkina Faso. Paul D Cleary, Marianne C Fahs et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•1992

Providing efficacious, compassionate, and efficient medical care to persons with HIV infection is one of the greatest challenges that will face US hospitals this decade. Unfortunately, there have been almost no studies of how organizational arrangements are related to the quality of care. We developed an interview protocol and conducted a pilot study to evaluate the instrument's ability to detect differences in selected interpersonal aspects of c…

An AIDS unit model ("cluster beds") and a general inpatient placement model ("scatter beds") in a major teaching hospital were compared to determine whether they differed on several dimensions of care. After controlling for severity of illness, (the major predictor of admission to the AIDS unit), length of stay, charges, and inpatient mortality rates did not differ between the two settings. Equal proportions of White, Hispanic, male, and privatel…

  • Paid Work and Unpaid Help by Caregivers of the Disabled and Frail Elders

Rachel Floersheim Boaz, Charlotte F Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1992

Informal caregiving by women, and to a lesser extent by men, is a major source of assistance for the chronically disabled and most dependent older persons living in the community. However, because women's commitment to career employment may diminish, this source of help at the time when (according to demographic trends) the number of very old Americans will increase, the effect of employment on the time they devote to informal caregiving is an im…

  • Does Having More Time After Retirement Change the Demand for Physician Services

Rachel Floersheim Boaz, Charlotte F Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1989

Various aspects of the demand for ambulatory services of physicians have been studied by researchers, but so far the effect of increased availability of nonwork time due to retirement on demand has not been examined. This study investigated whether discouraging early retirement (which was the intent of the 1983 Amendments to the Social Security Act) will reduce the use of medical services because persons who continue to work have less time than r…

  • Economic Costs of Schizophrenia

Charlotte F Muller, Charlotte Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1983

Measurement of the costs of health care and work loss of chronic mental patients is a vital link between clinical care and political decisions. If costs associated with poor outcomes of deinstitutionalized patients are identified, the margin for investing in programs that could improve outcomes without raising overall costs is also identified. This study analyzed direct and indirect costs in the first year after 119 chronic schizophrenics, drawn …

  • Alternative Approaches to Physician Reimbursement Under Medicare

Charlotte F Muller, Charlotte Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1980

A simulation approach was used to compare the effects of different methods of determining reasonable charges for physicians' services under Medicare on government outlays, physician revenues, and beneficiaries' financial burdens. This is an important policy area because of fee inflation and rises in physician income. Queens County claims for 1976 and 1977 were used for this analysis. The different methods that were compared to the current method,…

  • Carrier Discretionary Practices and Physician Payment Under Medicare Part B

    Charlotte Muller, Jonah Otelsberc•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1979

Although Medicare is a national program, administration of Part B payments to physicians is in the hands of insurance organizations in ten Medicare regions. The carriers follow varying practices in using actual charges within localities as the basis for determining reasonable charges for physicians' services. While some of these practices have already been shown to influence fee levels, reasonable charge determination involves many more whose inf…

Long-term care activities of New York City voluntary hospitals in 1967 have been studied through annual reports to the United Hospital Fund. Only 10 per cent of the beds in 39 hospitals were in long-term care; general hospitals had chiefly mental-illness beds and special hospitals, beds for chronic patients. Home care programs represented a substitute for an addition of about 5 per cent of capacity. Physical medicine departments were widely preva…
