How and why does demographic decline lead to support for populist parties? The case of the Czech Republic
In recent decades, a strong demographic decline has characterized post-communist Central and Eastern European countries. Using the Czech Republic as a case study, we apply a multilevel structural equation model to test the mechanism whereby demographic decline translates into support for populist parties. Combining regional and individual data, we show that the long-term demographic decline (measured at the regional level) recorded between 2008 a…
Photography as protogeometry
The article investigates relationships between measuring and imagemaking, focusing on the common historical context for the universalization of measurement standards and the emergence of photography. It discusses several artworks that directly tackle the problem of measurement and standardization (Marcel Duchamp’s 3 stoppages-étalon; John Baldessari’s Throwing Three Balls in the Air to Get a Straight Line (Best of Thirty-Six Attempts); and Sasha …
Analysing the gap in non-institutionalized political engagement between Western Europe and the post-communist region
Regional Peripheralization as Contextual Source of Populist Attitudes in Germany and Czech Republic
This article seeks to shed more light on the reasons for the regionally uneven distribution of populist attitudes. We take into account both individual-level and contextual drivers and focus mainly on the latter. We argue that regional peripheralization processes are a key contextual condition driving populist attitudes, especially in post-communist settings. The empirical analysis is based on a unique dataset combining comparable items from two …
Political and public engagement as topological boundary-making
The attitude of citizens of the post-communist countries of the CEE region towards public and political engagement is described in the literature as deficient: characterised mainly by civic and political passivity, disenchantment or withdrawal to the private sphere. We challenge this narrative and use the example of Czechia to show that not only ‘deficits’ are present, but also that people have a different understanding of what is political. We p…
Peripheralization Processes as a Contextual Source of Populist Vote Choices
The existing research on contextual sources of support for populist parties has revolved around two factors: the unemployment rate and the size of immigrant groups. Conceived as residential characteristics, observation of these factors has been seen to increase support for radical parties in Western European countries. We identify different contextual (non-individual) drivers of support for populist parties in the post-communist Czech Republic (C…
Populism, Anti-establishment Politics, and Dimensions of Political Competition
This article analyzes the nature of populism in the Czech Republic, which was until recently described as centrist and moderate. It uses an approach that views populism as associated with empty policy space: that is, with (previously) secondary issues on which the established parties have unclear positions. The empirical analyses presented in this article show that in the Czech Republic, where political conflict has traditionally been based on di…

Between fraternal help and economic realism. The employment of Polish workers in Czechoslovakia (1945-1950)
The paper deals with the topic of the employment of the Polish workers in post- -war Czechoslovakia. Analysed are mainly the features of the Czechoslovak workforce policy with some insight into the political context of the Czechoslovak-Polish relations. Despite the tensions, the employment of Polish citizens in Czechoslovak coal mines continued after the war in line with the laws of supply and demand. The advantages of the temporary border crossi…

Popular Support for Direct Democracy
This paper focuses on the sources of popular support for direct democracy in the Czech Republic. The analysis first replicates the standard approaches used in previous scholarly research, testing theories of cognitive mobilisation and alienation using the standard regression modelling approach. The results are, however, somewhat inconclusive, as have been the results of previous empirical research in other European countries. It is hypothesised t…
The use of local direct democracy in the Czech Republic
Over the past 15 years there has been an increase in the use of local direct democracy in the Czech Republic. The analysis shows that the primary cause has been the regulation of development projects. Using transaction costs economics (TCE) approach it is shown how the regulation related to the siting of development projects leads to a not-in-my-backyard (NIMBY) response resulting in political activism that uses institutions of local direct democ…
The Effect of Direct Democracy on Turnout
Does direct democracy lead to increased electoral turnout? Research in the United States has demonstrated this effect and proposed two reasons for it: (1) the process of being involved in direct political participation may educate citizens and lead to their increased long-term political engagement (this explanation draws on the theory of participatory democracy) and/or (2) underlying issues and competitive campaigning draw public interest and cau…

Autor upozorňuje na skutečnost, že se vstupem dějepisectví do světa hypertextu je spojena řada pochybností a obav, pokud jde o budoucnost samotného oboru. Are the New and Old EU Countries Financially Integrated
During the last four years, the eight Eastern European countries that joined the EU in 2004 have made significant strides toward financial integration with the EU. Several pieces of evidence support this finding. First, yields on long‐term sovereign bonds in accession countries have converged towards EU levels. This is true for both bonds denominated in local currency and bonds denominated in euro. Secondly, while the issuance of euro‐denominated…
