Antitrust and Equal Liberty
As Robert Bork once asserted, 'Antitrust policy cannot be made rational until we are able to give a firm answer to one question: What is the point of the law-what are its goals? Everything else follows from the answer we give.' The appropriate answer, however, is not, as Bork suggested, consumer welfare. Instead, antitrust should serve the equal liberties that citizens give themselves when they engage in economic activity. Given the complexity an…
The Potential Impact of a Public Health Approach to Improving the Physical Health of People Living with Mental Illness
With already wide disparities in physical health and life expectancy, COVID-19 presents people with mental illness with additional threats to their health: decreased access to health services, increased social isolation, and increased socio-economic disadvantage. Each of these factors has exacerbated the risk of poor health and early death for people with mental illness post-COVID-19. Unless effective primary care and preventative health response…
Performance of a Predictive Model versus Prescription-Based Thresholds in Identifying Patients at Risk of Fatal Opioid Overdose
Background: Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) collect controlled substance prescriptions dispensed within a state. Many PDMP programs perform targeted outreach (i.e., “unsolicited reporting”) for patients who exceed numerical thresholds, however, the degree to which patients at highest risk of fatal opioid overdose are identified has not been compared with one another or with a predictive model. Methods: A retrospective analysis was p…
The Impact of Various Risk Assessment Time Frames on the Performance of Opioid Overdose Forecasting Models
BACKGROUND: An individual's risk for future opioid overdoses is usually assessed using a 12-month "lookback" period. Given the potential urgency of acting rapidly, we compared the performance of alternative predictive models with risk information from the past 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. METHODS: We included 1,014,033 Maryland residents aged 18-80 with at least 1 opioid prescription and no recorded death in 2015. We used 2015 Maryland prescription dr…
Mean and Lowly Things
Mean and Lowly Things
In 2005 Jackson ventured into the remote swamp forests of the Congo to collect reptiles and amphibians. This book is an account of her research on the front lines of the biodiversity crisis—coping with endless delays in obtaining permits, learning to outrun army ants, subsisting on Spam and manioc, and ultimately falling in love with the forest.
