  • Prevalence and Risk Factors for Post-Covid Condition 12 Months After a Test

    Open Access•Michelle H Moniz, M Moniz et al.•ARTICLE•Gaceta Sanitaria•2025

Background/Objectives: PCC prevalence estimates vary widely. Additionally, its development is associated with multiple factors, from individual characteristics to the broader impacts of the pandemic. The aim of this study was to characterise the prevalence of symptoms 12 months after SARS-CoV-2 testing, comparing individuals with positive and negative test results, and to analyse the factors associated with the prevalence of Long COVID symptoms i…

  • Individual risk factors associated with Sars-CoV-2 infection during Alpha variant in high-income countries

Open Access•Marta Moniz, Sofia Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

  • Is a tiered restrictions system an effective intervention for Covid-19 control? Results from Portugal, November-December 2020

Open Access•Marta Moniz, Patrícia Soares et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

We observed a reduction in the growth rate in very high tier after the tiered restriction system was implemented, but we also observed a lag between tiered restriction system implementation and the onset of consequent effects. This could suggest the importance of early implementation of stricter measures for pandemic control. Thus, studies analysing a broader period of time are needed

  • The Pandemic-Related Factors Associated with Emergency Department Visits in Portugal throughout Two Years of the Pandemic

Open Access•Walaa Kinaan, Patrícia Soares et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the use of emergency departments (ED) worldwide. This study identifies the pandemic-related factors associated with the number of ED visits in mainland Portugal and each of its regions. We collected data on ED visits from March 2020 to March 2022. Data on incidence, vaccination, mobility, containment index, and Google search volume were retrieved from open online sources at different time points. We fitted a qua…

  • Investigating the role of symptom valorisation in tuberculosis patient delay in urban areas in Portugal

Open Access•Margarida de Morais, Sofia Sousa et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

These findings emphasise the importance of symptom valorisation in timely TB diagnosis. Patients who did not value their symptoms had longer PD, indicating a need for interventions to improve symptom recognition. Our findings also corroborate the importance of the socioeconomic determinants of health, highlighting tobacco as a risk factor both for TB and for PD

  • A temporal analysis on patient and health service delays in pulmonary tuberculosis in Portugal

Open Access•Bhaswar Chakma, Dulce Gomes et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Background Tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis and treatment delays increase the period of infectiousness, making TB control difficult and increasing the fatality rates. This study aimed to determine the evolution of health care service delay (time between the patient’s first contact with the health service and the diagnosis/start of treatment) and patient delay (time between onset symptoms date and the date of first contact with health services) for Pul…

  • Factors Associated with Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy

Open Access•Patrícia Soares, João Victor Muniz Rocha et al.•ARTICLE•Vaccines•2021

It is critical to develop tailored strategies to increase acceptability of the COVID-19 vaccine and decrease hesitancy. Hence, this study aims to assess and identify factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in Portugal. We used data from a community-based survey, “COVID-19 Barometer: Social Opinion”, which includes data regarding intention to take COVID-19 vaccines, health status, and risk perception in Portugal from September 2020 to J…

  • A Case-Control Study of Contextual Factors for Sars-CoV-2 Transmission

Open Access•Andreia Leite, Teresa Leão et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: Knowledge on the settings and activities associated with a higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission is essential to inform decision-making. We thus designed a case-control study to identify relevant settings for community transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Portugal. Methods: We evaluated 1,088 cases, identified through the national surveillance system, and 787 community controls, recruited us…

  • Factors Associated with the Patient’s Decision to Avoid Healthcare during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Patrícia Soares, Andreia Leite et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in changes in healthcare use. This study aimed to identify factors associated with a patient's decision to avoid and/or delay healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic. We used data from a community-based survey in Portugal from July 2020 to August 2021, "COVID-19 Barometer: Social Opinion", which included data regarding health services use, risk perception and confidence in health services. We framed our analysis…

  • Double jeopardy from the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Ana Gama, Joana Alves et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2021

The social gradient in risk of exposure and in economic impact of the pandemic can result in an accumulated vulnerability for socioeconomic deprived populations. The COVID-19 pandemic seems to have a double effect in these groups, contributing to heightened disparities and poor health outcomes, including in mental health. Protecting the most vulnerable populations is key to prevent the spread of the disease and mitigate the deepening of social an…

  • Delayed diagnosis of active pulmonary tuberculosis - potential risk factors for patient and healthcare delays in Portugal

Open Access•João Almeida Santos, Andreia Leite et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Patient delay and total delay have increased in recent years. Older patients, patients with alcohol problems, other comorbidities, unemployed or from countries with high TB incidence would benefit from the development of specific public health strategies that could help reduce the delay in TB diagnosis observed in our study. This study emphasizes the need to promote awareness of TB in the general population and among the healthcare community, esp…

  • Google Earth Engine Open-Source Code for Land Surface Temperature Estimation from the Landsat Series

    Open Access•Sofia L Ermida, Patrícia Soares et al.•ARTICLE•Remote Sensing•2020

Land Surface Temperature (LST) is increasingly important for various studies assessing land surface conditions, e.g., studies of urban climate, evapotranspiration, and vegetation stress. The Landsat series of satellites have the potential to provide LST estimates at a high spatial resolution, which is particularly appropriate for local or small-scale studies. Numerous studies have proposed LST retrieval algorithms for the Landsat series, and some…
