Bridging the ICD11 and the DSM-5 personality disorders classification systems
Although this study has limitations, its findings sustain that the PID5BF + M has potential to assess the severity of personality disfunction and to characterize the stylistic features of PD as they are conceived by both the ICD-11 and the DSM-5. Although more research is needed regarding the convergent validity of the PID5BF + M, this new test contributes to the harmonization of both systems and to parsimony in the assessment of PD, which is the…
Maladaptive personality traits in depressive and substance use disorders
Studies on the relationship between personality and depressive disorders (DD) or substance use disorders (SUD) often refer to the normal personality model and focus mainly on the “big” factors. Domain level results with the Personality Inventory for DSM‐5 (PID‐5) tend to be consistent with NEO‐PI‐R or NEO‐FFI results, however facet level results in the specific characteristics of these disorders are scarce. The main objective of this study was to…
The Utility of ICD-11 and DSM-5 Traits for Differentiating Patients With Personality Disorders From Other Clinical Groups
The ICD-11 Classification of Personality Disorders delineates five trait domain qualifiers (i.e., negative affectivity, detachment, dissociality, disinhibition, and anankastia), whereas the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders also delineates a separate domain of psychoticism. These six combined traits not only characterize individual stylistic features, but also the severity of their maladaptive expressions. It was, therefore, the ai…
The Arabic Version of the Personality Inventory for the DSM-5 (PID-5) in a Clinical Sample of United Arab Emirates (UAE) Nationals
Objectives: We aimed to test the potential of the Arabic version of the PID-5 to distinguish between clinical and non-clinical participants, as well as to examine its convergent validity and factor structure in an Emirati clinical sample. Methods: The Arabic version of the PID-5 was administered to a clinical sample comprised of 156 participants (M age = 31.38, SD = 8.99, 37.8% male, 62.2% female) and a community sample also comprised of 156 part…
Intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientation in Portuguese Catholics
The opposition between intrinsic (I) and extrinsic (E) religious motivation was operationalised by Allport and Ross through a Religious Orientation Scale (ROS). However, empirical studies using the ROS or other derived instruments have not always been able to confirm this clear opposition. This study presents the results of the Portuguese version of the Age-Universal I/E Scale and of a Current Religious Practice Scale in four convenience communit…
Depressive Symptoms and Pain Complaints as Predictors of Later Development of Depression in Portuguese Middle-Aged Women
Pain complaints and depressive symptoms seem to be risk factors for future depressive episodes. We present a one-year follow-up study on Portuguese women and primary health care (initial sample: n = 503). We used the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), a short questionnaire on pain, and clinical interviews. We used forward stepwise logistic regression analysis to define models that enable the prediction of developing a majo…
A Population-Based Assessment of the Relationship Between Menopausal and Depressive Symptoms in Portuguese Women
Empirical research on the relationship between menopause and depression has found contradictory results. Some authors suggest that depression is related to menopausal symptoms and not to menopausal status per se. Our aim is to study the relationship between menopausal status and depressive symptoms in a sample (n = 728) of middle-aged Portuguese women, taking into account the presence of menopausal symptoms. Depressive symptoms were measured with…
A Population-Based Assessment of Midlife Portuguese Women's Experience of Perimenopause and Menopause
The frequency of changes experienced by menopausal women is variable in different cultures. It is our purpose to identify the symptoms that Portuguese women consider to be related to menopause. We also wish to evaluate the relations between these symptoms and menopausal status, sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, and medication-menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) and psychotropics. In women with a low educational level, the frequency of symptoms…
