Why Do Opinions and Actions Diverge? A Dynamic Framework to Explore the Impact of Subjective Norms
Socio-psychological studies have identified a common phenomenon where an individual’s public actions do not necessarily coincide with their private opinions, yet most existing models fail to capture the dynamic interplay between these two aspects. To bridge this gap, we propose a novel agent-based modeling framework that integrates opinion dynamics with a decision-making mechanism. More precisely, our framework generalizes the classical Hegselman…
Doxycycline prophylaxis for sexually transmitted infections prevention among men who have sex with men in China
Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) have a high prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The efficacy of doxycycline prophylaxis in STIs prevention has been demonstrated. This study aimed to examine the utilization of doxycycline prophylaxis among MSM in China, providing evidence to inform future policies and guidelines. Methods: Between June and July 2025, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in China, using a convenience …
The predictive validity of vocational interests for life outcomes across adulthood
(e.g., civic engagement, cultural participation) outcomes assessed 11 years later. Across adulthood (ages 25-67 at interest assessment), interests significantly contributed to all 12 outcomes, demonstrating that interests are predictive of life outcomes after adolescence and young adulthood. Age-moderation analyses using local structural equation modeling and age-group-specific analyses indicated that many interest-outcome links remained stable t…

Utilization of post-exposure prophylaxis potentially contributed to the changes of risk behaviors among men who have sex with men in China
Background: The HIV infection status among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China is a cause for concern. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) serves as a highly effective biomedical preventive measure against HIV infection. Substantial evidence has established an association between PEP utilization and risk behaviors among MSM, but whether the utilization of PEP has an impact on risk behaviors remains unknown. This study sought to elucidate the imp…
The impact of HIV self-testing on risk behaviors among men who have sex with men
Background Men who have sex with men (MSM) have a high prevalence of HIV and a low rate of HIV testing in China. HIV self-testing (HIVST) presents a viable strategy for expanding HIV testing among MSM. However, the impact of HIVST on risk behaviors among MSM remains controversial. Our study sought to ascertain this impact. Methods From April 2021 to January 2022, a mixed-methods study was conducted in Qingdao City, employing both quantitative and…
Measuring Setpoint vocational interest dimensions
Feeling good, doing good, and getting ahead
In recent years, a rapidly growing literature has shed light on important costs and benefits of prosocial motivation in the workplace. However, researchers have studied prosocial motivation using various labels, conceptualizations, and operationalizations, leaving this body of knowledge fragmented. In this study, we contribute to the literature by providing an integrated framework that organizes extant constructs and measures of prosocial motives a…
Understanding the career and job outcomes of contemporary career attitudes within the context of career environments
The number of empirical studies on contemporary career attitudes (e.g., protean and boundaryless career orientation) has grown in volume, and yet our understanding of how these attitudes relate to career and job outcomes is rather limited. There are inconsistent findings on these career attitudes and their outcomes. The purpose of this review is to integrate the two core arguments that explain this inconsistency: (1) there is a need for greater c…

Establishing an International Standards Framework and Action Research Agenda for Workplace Readiness and Success
Employers both in the United States and internationally are facing difficulties hiring workers who meet the skill requirements of 21st century jobs. This chapter focuses on the skill requirements of middle-skill jobs and argues for building a talent supply chain with standards that workforce entrants need to meet. The chapter provides a framework summarizing these skill requirements. By establishing a framework of critical skills for workplace re…
“Opting Out” or “Pushed Out”? Integrating Perspectives on Women’s Career Equality for Gender Inclusion and Interventions
This paper integrates the rapidly growing literatures on the individual and organizational factors that contribute to women’s career equality. We organize studies into three research perspectives: career preference, gender bias, and work-family explanations. These literatures diverge on whether women “opt out” or are “pushed out” of leadership positions in organizations. Further, the interconnectedness of these “pushes” and “pulls” and micro-macr…
A systematic review of personality trait change through intervention
The current meta-analysis investigated the extent to which personality traits changed as a result of intervention, with the primary focus on clinical interventions. We identified 207 studies that had tracked changes in measures of personality traits during interventions, including true experiments and prepost change designs. Interventions were associated with marked changes in personality trait measures over an average time of 24 weeks (e.g., d =…
Multilevel Analysis of Socioeconomic Determinants on Diabetes Prevalence, Awareness, Treatment and Self-Management in Ethnic Minorities of Yunnan Province, China
Future diabetes prevention and intervention programs should take both individual and township-level socioeconomic factors into account in the study regions
All STEM fields are not created equal
The degree of women's underrepresentation varies by STEM fields. Women are now overrepresented in social sciences, yet only constitute a fraction of the engineering workforce. In the current study, we investigated the gender differences in interests as an explanation for the differential distribution of women across sub-disciplines of STEM as well as the overall underrepresentation of women in STEM fields. Specifically, we meta-analytically revie…
Can personality traits and intelligence compensate for background disadvantage? Predicting status attainment in adulthood
This study investigated the interplay of family background and individual differences, such as personality traits and intelligence (measured in a large U.S. representative sample of high school students; N = 81,000) in predicting educational attainment, annual income, and occupational prestige 11 years later. Specifically, we tested whether individual differences followed 1 of 3 patterns in relation to parental socioeconomic status (SES) when pre…
The Development and Validation of the Comprehensive Inventory of Thriving ( CIT ) and the Brief Inventory of Thriving ( BIT )
In this article we present the development and validation of two new measures of psychological well‐being: the Comprehensive Inventory of Thriving ( CIT ) and the Brief Inventory of Thriving ( BIT ). These measures were developed with two specific goals in mind: (1) to measure a broad range of psychological well‐being constructs and represent a holistic view of positive functioning; and (2) to predict important health outcomes that are useful for…
Cultural Differences in Attitudes Toward Action and Inaction
The current research examined whether nations differ in their attitudes toward action and inaction. It was anticipated that members of dialectical East Asian societies would show a positive association in their attitudes toward action/inaction. However, members of non-dialectical European-American societies were expected to show a negative association in their attitudes toward action/inaction. Young adults in 19 nations completed measures of dial…
Vocational Interests and Performance
Despite early claims that vocational interests could be used to distinguish successful workers and superior students from their peers, interest measures are generally ignored in the employee selection literature. Nevertheless, theoretical descriptions of vocational interests from vocational and educational psychology have proposed that interest constructs should be related to performance and persistence in work and academic settings. Moreover, on…
