  • Language attitudes, ethnicity and social class in New Zealand

    Ingrid Huygens, Graham M Vaughan•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•1983•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 2

The extent to which ethnic speech styles can be detected, and how they and English R.P. are evaluated, have been problematic issues in the small literature devoted to New Zealand speech varieties. In the present study, samples of spontaneous speech of English, Dutch, Maori and Pakeha speakers (from three status groups) were presented on audiotapes to 120 students. Ratings were made on four Social and four Personal Scales, while an attempt to desc…

  • Bias in Reward Allocation in an Intergroup and an Interpersonal Context

Graham M Vaughan, Henri Tajfel et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1981•Citada por: 10

Children's strategies in giving money to others were examined in an intergroup condition, based on a weak' act of social categorization, and in an interpersonal condition, based on strong friendship choice. Over a series of trials, coins were arranged on cards so that each decision was made in a 3 x 2 matrix. Children used a Maximum Difference (relative gain) strategy to a marked degree, a Maximum Ingroup Payoff (absolute gain) to some extent, bu…

  • Was 1898 a "great date" in the history of experimental social psychology

Open Access•Hilary Haines, Graham M Vaughan•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•1979

It is customary for modern social psychology textbooks to claim that experimental social psychology began in 1898, the year in which Norman Triplett published the results of his investigation into the dynamogenic factors in pacemaking and competition. An historical enquiry shows this claim to be quite without foundation, and it is postulated that the Triplett experiment functions as an “origin myth” which is sustained by inductivist approaches to…

    Open Access•Graham M Vaughan•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1978•Citada por: 18•Referencias: 8

Twelve hundred Maori and Pakeha (White, European) children in New Zealand ranging from five to twelve years of age, have been tested for intergroup preferences in a series of studies. These investigations spanned the years 1961–1970, and were conducted in four different regions, Previous analysis of these results had concentrated on the ontogeny of ethnic awareness and attitude development, and has not succeeded in relating distinct regional diff…

Groups of active churchmembers and non-churchmemhers were examined for personality changes over a five-year period. Personality assessment was obtained through use of the Sixteen Personality Factor (16 PF) questionnaire. Results indicated that at both testing times the active churchmember group was significantly and consistently different on several personality dimensions. Specifically the active churchmembers tended to be more tender-minded, hig…

  • Using Balanced Scales to Control Acquiescence

    Jonathan Cloud, Graham M Vaughan•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1970•Citada por: 8

The contamination of personality inventories and attitude scales by acquiescent response style is a continuing problem. Research with a recently-devised conservatism scale demonstrates empirically that the balanced keying of items is sufficient to prevent such contamination if item ambiguity is kept to a minimum. Such a scale also enables a statistical assessment of the degree to which unbalanced scales are biased by this response style. As is we…
