The Role of Social Ties and Social Support in Maintaining Physical and Mental Well-Being Among Korean Americans Living with Chronic Hepatitis B
Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB), a serious disease requiring lifelong management, disproportionately affects Asian Americans, including Korean Americans. Many Korean Americans experience linguistic and sociocultural barriers, potentially worsening health challenges. While social ties and social support are well-recognized determinants of health, their role within unique populations merits exploration. Using longitudinal survey data, we identified patte…
Exploring the role ofculture and cognitive heuristics in assessing the credibility of cancer (mis)information on Facebook among U.S. Latinos/as
As health misinformation continues to permeate social media, it is of utmost importance to understand how credibility assessments are made among those most vulnerable to health inequities. Dual-processing models suggest that online credibility assessments are largely made through the use of cognitive heuristics. However, little is known about the role cultural identity plays in these assessments, particularly in light of health (mis)information e…
HBV Transmission Knowledge Among Korean-American Chronic Hepatitis B Patients in the United States
Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a condition that disproportionately affects Asian Americans in the United States. Knowledge of transmission is crucial for CHB patients to practice prevention methods to limit the spread of the hepatitis B virus (HBV), but also live their lives free from unwarranted fears or restrictions. Recently released Black men’s perceptions of the impact of incarceration on sexual partnering
Evidence suggests that men with recent histories of incarceration are more likely to engage in high-risk sexual activity, however there is limited research exploring how having been recently released from prison might impact men's sexual risk behaviours or sexual partnering. This qualitative study explores the ways in which exposure to incarceration impacts the dynamics of sexual partnering among recently released Black men in Baltimore, USA. In-…

Persistent, subjective symptoms of unknown etiology following treatment for Lyme disease have been termed post- treatment Lyme disease syndrome or chronic Lyme disease (PTLDS/CLD). The objective of this study was to give primacy to the patient experience of this medically contested condition by eliciting patient illness narratives and identifying emergent issues through semistructured interviews conducted among 29 participants. We used thematic n…

I Always Felt I Had to Prove My Manhood”
Objectives. We explored gender role strain (GRS) arising from conflict between homosexuality and cultural conceptions of masculinity among young Black men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods. We conducted a categorical analysis (a qualitative, 3-stage, iterative analysis) of data from studies conducted in 2001 to 2006, which interviewed 35 men aged 18 to 24 years in 3 New York cities and Atlanta, Georgia. Results. Participants described rigid, o…
Exploring Important Influences on the Healthfulness of Prostate Cancer Survivors' Diets
A cancer diagnosis is often conceptualized as a teachable moment when individuals might be motivated to make lifestyle changes. Many prostate cancer survivors, however, do not adhere to dietary guidelines. In this article, we explore how cancer affected prostate cancer survivors' diets and identify important influences on diet. Twenty prostate cancer survivors completed three 24-hour dietary recalls and an in-depth dietary interview. We analyzed …
Regulating Alcohol Advertising
Objectives. We analyzed beer, spirits, and alcopop magazine advertisements to determine adherence to federal and voluntary advertising standards. We assessed the efficacy of these standards in curtailing potentially damaging content and protecting public health. Methods. We obtained data from a content analysis of a census of 1795 unique advertising creatives for beer, spirits, and alcopops placed in nationally available magazines between 2008 an…
Still a burning issue
Tobacco control advocates expend considerable effort in generating newsstories on tobacco issues to assist progress in tobacco control, and the newscoverage itself may have important policy and behavioral influences. Yet,studies of trends in such news coverage are uncommon. Between 2001 and2006, we conducted a content analysis of tobacco-related newspaper articlesin the 12 major daily Australian newspapers and coded them for type ofarticle, topic…
