Comparative analysis of tuberculosis management in Indigenous North Canada and Alaska, USA from 1950s to 2019
First Nations People Living With HIV
First Nations people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Canada face a range of complex barriers during a time when infection rates are increasing. The Northern HIV Journey Mapping Project explored this issue from the perspectives of both First Nations people living with HIV and the health care service providers who support them. Drawing from an Indigenous-led, decolonizing methodology, this study adopted the philosophies of Two…
Radon gas concentrations in on-reserve housing in two northern Manitoba First Nation communities
Two northern first nations measured radon levels in on-Reserve housing. • The average indoor air concentration of radon gas was 174.7 Bq/m 3 . • Thirty-eight percent had radon gas levels ≥200 Bq/m 3 . • The study identified the need for culturally specific training. • Local knowledge sharing and culturally appropriate infographics are key tools

“Finally when I started falling down”
This paper adds evidence to a growing body of literature seeking to understand the disproportionate occurrence of tuberculosis (TB) in Indigenous populations of Canada and reveals insights that may inform effective interventions. As a disease, TB is recognized as a disorder of the body, for which there are successful treatments. Its persistence in some populations, however, requires an understanding of TB as an illness, whereby disease is shaped …
Old Keyam – A Framework for Examining Disproportionate Experience of Tuberculosis Among Aboriginal Peoples of the Canadian Prairies
On the Canadian Prairies, First Nations and Métis peoples are disproportionately affected by tuberculosis (TB) compared to other Canadians. Statistics show enduring transmission and high rates of active TB disease. Despite awareness of the social determinants of TB transmission—such as substance abuse, comorbidities, and basic needs being unmet—transmission and outbreaks continue to occur among Aboriginal people. The Determinants of Tuberculosis …
Assessment of Tuberculosis Outbreak Definitions for a First Nations On-Reserve Context
Improving the prevention and control of tuberculosis (TB) in Aboriginal communities in Canada is a matter of great urgency. Canadian-born Aboriginal people account for 21% of TB cases in the country even though they represent only 3.8% of the overall population. Moreover, age standardized rates of TB in Aboriginal people reveal an incidence almost six fold greater than the national rate. There are unique challenges in the prevention and control o…
The evolving epidemiology of chlamydial and gonococcal infections in response to control programs in Winnipeg, Canada
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the transmission dynamics of chlamydia and gonorrhea in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and to assess implications for control programs. METHODS: Chlamydia and gonorrhea surveillance case reports (1988 through 1995) and contact-tracing reports (1991 through 1995) were examined. RESULTS: High incidence rates of both chlamydia and gonorrhea clustered in geographic core areas characterize…
