  • What Can We Reasonably Predict Concerning Alien Religion and Ethics

    Kelly C Smith•ARTICLE•Theology and Science•2024

It is very easy to be pessimistic concerning what we can know of possible aliens, much less what we can know of their religious or ethical beliefs. Nevertheless, I make the attempt by laying out a set of assumptions consistent with our best science and then use these assumptions to make reasonable inductive projections. The results are, unsurprisingly, but at the very least can serve as a critique delimiting what cannot be said as much as what ca…

  • Future space missions and human enhancement: Medical and ethical challenges

Open Access•Konrad Szocik, Mark Shelhamer et al.•ARTICLE•Futures•2021•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 64

Future human space missions to Mars and beyond may be realized for different research, economic, political or survival reasons. Since space remains a hazardous environment for humans, space exploration and exploitation requires the development and deployment of effective countermeasures. In this paper, we discuss prospects for human enhancement by gene editing, synthetic biology, or implants, for the purposes of future space missions. We argue th…

  • Cosmogenesis, Complexity, and Neo-Natural Faith in the Context of Astrobiology

    Open Access•Kelly C Smith•ARTICLE•Religions•2020•Referencias: 9

It is fair to say that religion, and in particular the ways in which some Christian and Islamic thinkers have again begun to encroach on the domain of science (e.g., global warming, the teaching of evolution), has caused a great deal of consternation within the scientific and philosophical communities. An understandable reaction to these developments is to reject out of hand even the slightest taint of religion in these fields-a position that has…

    Open Access•Robert N Brandon, Janis Antonovics et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1994•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 11

Sober (1992) has recently evaluated Brandon's (1982, 1990; see also 1985, 1988) use of Salmon's (1971) concept of screening-off in the philosophy of biology. He critiques three particular issues, each of which will be considered in this discussion
