  • Recent multispecies tree-growth decline reveals a severe aridity change in Mediterranean Chile

    Open Access•Álvaro González‐Reyes, Duncan A Christie et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Soil moisture (SM) is a crucial factor in the water cycle, sustaining ecosystems and influencing local climate patterns by regulating the energy balance between the soil and atmosphere. Due to the absence of long-term, in-situ measurements of SM, studies utilizing satellite-based data and tree-ring analysis have become valuable in assessing variations of SM at regional and multi-century scales, as well as determining its effects on tree growth. T…

  • Increased wildfire hazard along South-Central Chile under the RCP8.5 scenario as revealed by high-resolution modeling

Open Access•Isabella Ciocca, Alfonso Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Among Mediterranean regions, the South-Central Zone of Chile (SCZCh) portrays a landscape where wildfires constantly and historically occur, many times damaging ecosystems, lives and livelihoods. Since 2010, this zone has entered a period of unprecedented drought that has contributed to wildfire rising trends. Wildfire occurrence and intensity in this zone can be associated with three main factors: climate and land cover as conditioning factors, …

  • Leaf Thermal and Chemical Properties as Natural Drivers of Plant Flammability of Native and Exotic Tree Species of the Valparaíso Region, Chile

Open Access•Fabián Guerrero, Carla Hernández et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Forest fires are one of the main environmental threats in Chile. Fires in this Mediterranean climate region frequently affect native forests and exotic plantations, including in several cases urban and rural settlements. Considering the scarcity of information regarding the fire response dynamics of tree species that are frequently affected by fires, this study aims to establish a flammability classification according to the evolution of the fire…

  • A Network for Advancing Dendrochronology, Dendrochemistry and Dendrohydrology in South America

    Isabella Aguilera-Betti, Isabella Aguilera‐Betti et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2020

Tree-ring research (TRR) in South America (SA) continues to make important contributions in multiple sub-disciplines, including dendrochemistry and dendrohydrology. This report describes some of the advances in TRR in SA presented in a two-day International Meeting Research entitled “An International Network to Promote Advances in Dendrochronology in South America”, organized by the Laboratory of Dendrochronology and Environmental Studies of the …

  • Geohistorical records of the Anthropocene in Chile

Open Access•Eugenia Gayó, Eugenia M Gayo et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2019

The deep-time dynamics of coupled socio-ecological systems at different spatial scales is viewed as a key framework to understand trends and mechanisms that have led to the Anthropocene. By integrating archeological and paleoenvironmental records, we test the hypothesis that Chilean societies progressively escalated their capacity to shape national biophysical systems as socio-cultural complexity and pressures on natural resources increased over …

  • Anthropocene and streamflow

Open Access•Pilar Barría, Maisa Rojas et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2019

Since 1981, water allocation in Chile has been based on a water use rights (WURs) market, with limited regulatory and supervisory mechanisms. The volume to be granted as permanent and eventual WURs is calculated from streamflow records, if stream gauge data are available, or from hydrologic parameter transfer from gauged to ungauged catchments, usually with less than 50 years of record. To test the performance of this allocation system, while ana…
