Multi-Hazard assessment methods for planning
Integrating interdisciplinary thinking and education in graduate disaster research curricula
Natural hazard and disaster resilience research requires a multidisciplinary approach to address the complexities of risk mitigation and recovery for vulnerable communities. To this end, an interdisciplinary course was developed, with faculty from civil engineering, urban planning, and anthropology. The course aimed to deepen students' understanding of coastal hazard risks and to equip them with an understanding of interdisciplinary and community…
Effect of Seating Location on Undergraduates’ Performance Based on Classroom Size and Quadrant Surveying
This study explores the relationship between seating quadrants and student performance, including the role of classroom type in the quadrant effect. Data collected from 131 classes taught at 17 colleges of Northwest A&F University in China were analyzed using the ordinary least squares method. The results revealed that where a student sat in a classroom always had a significant effect on their performance. Classroom type also played an important …
The interaction between urban heat island and urban parks
Planning for Disaster Recovery
Scholars and practitioners have long called for more planning leadership in community disaster recovery. Yet, how planners perceive themselves in disaster recovery, understand recovery processes, and participate in recovery activities remains relatively unknown. A survey of APA members found that improvements are needed for the planning field to meet increasing societal disaster needs. Few respondents have participated in pre- or postdisaster rec…
How Plans Prepare for Future Uncertainty
This study integrates Land Change Modeling with the Plan Integration for Resilience Scorecard TM methodology to assess coastal communities' preparedness for uncertain future urban growth and flood hazards. Findings indicate that, under static climate conditions, the network of plans in Tampa is well prepared across all urban growth scenarios, but less so in the face of a changing climate. Specifically, scenario outputs that consider climate chang…
Ramulus Cinnamomi essential oil exerts an anti-inflammatory effect on RAW264.7 cells through N-acylethanolamine acid amidase inhibition
Plan Integration for Ecological Resilience
A community’s resilience is strongly influenced by the growth management guidance provided by its network of plans. Wetland loss has been shown to amplify flood damage. This study explores the relationship between plan integration and wetland alteration, comparing the findings from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and League City, Texas. Combining spatial analytics, a Plan Integration for Resilience ScorecardTM evaluation, and correlational statistics, …
Linking landscape spatial heterogeneity to urban heat island and outdoor human thermal comfort in Tokyo
Examining factors influencing plan integration for community resilience in six US coastal cities using Hierarchical Linear Modeling
Using a resilience scorecard to improve local planning for vulnerability to hazards and climate change
Making Room for the River
Problem, research strategy, and findings: In this study we analyze plan integration for flood resilience in the city of Nijmegen, the site of the largest Room for the River project in The Netherlands. Little is known about the degree to which local and regional plans are coordinated with the national Room for the River program or about the cumulative influence of plans on flood vulnerability. To effectively investigate these issues, we use and bu…
Integrating a resilience scorecard and landscape performance tools into a Geodesign process
Uncertainty about the impacts of sea level rise make the ability to forecast future spatial conditions a necessary planning/design tool. Geodesign integrates multiple fields of science with change/impact models and planning/design strategies. Proactive planning analyses such as newly developed scorecards allow for plan evaluation; design strategies can now be quantitatively assessed using landscape performance calculators. Neither have been explo…
Plans that Disrupt Development
Urban plans often ignore the uneven impacts of hazards on socially vulnerable populations. We evaluate the degree to which equity policies in local networks of plans support risk reduction for socially vulnerable populations, and examine the relationship between equity policies scores and the level of social vulnerability in six cities exposed to floods and projected sea level rise. We find high variability in equity policy support for risk reduc…
Knowing where others stand
Status hierarchies are perhaps the single most important form of social structure within groups, ubiquitous and affecting groups' information flow, decision-making, and performance as well as the behavior and outcomes of individual members. The extent to which individuals are able to accurately perceive and navigate their groups' status hierarchies may thus be a critical determinant of their success. Research to date, however, has not yet fully e…
Costly Punishment Increases Prosocial Punishment by Designated Punishers
A classic problem in the literature on authority is that those with the power to enforce cooperation and proper norms of conduct can also abuse or misuse their power. The present research tested the argument that concerns about legitimacy can help regulate the use of power to punish by invoking a sense of what is morally right or socially proper for power-holders. We tested this idea in a laboratory experiment using public goods games in which on…
