  • Improving case-detection of wasting among under-five-year-old children in Ethiopia

Open Access•Alinoor Mohamed Farah, Hamid Yimam Hassen et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

    WHO recommends weight-for-height Z-score (WHZ)

  • Eating away from home among hypertensive patients in Addis Ababa

Open Access•Hana Shumetie, Robel Yirgu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

Eating away from home makes healthy dietary choices challenging. Foods prepared away from home are commonly energy dense, micronutrient poor, and contain high salt making them less preferred from non-communicable disease (NCD)-perspectives and may increase the risk of poor blood pressure control. In the Ethiopian context, the frequency of eating away from home and its association with blood pressure control have not been explored before. To asses…

  • Effect of Family Muac Utilization in Identifying Severity of Acute Malnutrition at Admission to Nutrition Programs Among Children Aged 6–59 Months Ethiopia

Open Access•Meron Tamirat, Alinoor Mohamed Farah et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2025

Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) screening is a simple community-level method for detecting acute malnutrition. The Family MUAC approach, which trains caregivers to measure their children's MUAC and refer them for treatment, has shown promise, but evidence regarding its impact on malnutrition severity at admission is limited. To address this gap, we conducted a longitudinal study from March to May 2024 in two districts in Eastern Ethiopia, enro…

  • Revisiting health systems to integrate perinatal mental health into maternal and child health services

    Open Access•Anteneh Asefa, C Hanlon et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2024

box There is a growing call for actionable recommendations to promote perinatal mental health and to prevent and treat perinatal mental health conditions, particularly in Africa

  • Effective Coverage of Modern Contraceptive Use in Ethiopia

Open Access•Misrak Getnet, Samson Gebremedhin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

The increase in contraceptive prevalence rate (crude coverage) in Ethiopia over the past two decades does not necessarily reflect service quality, and although the proportion of women with unmet needs has decreased, it remains unacceptably high. Hence, this study aimed to estimate the effective coverage (EC) of modern contraceptive methods in Ethiopia, considering the quality of care. We used nationally representative surveys, such as health faci…

  • Understanding Socioeconomic Inequalities in Zero-Dose Children for Vaccination in Underserved Settings of Ethiopia

Open Access•Gashaw Andargie Biks, Fisseha Shiferie et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Despite considerable global efforts to enhance vaccine distribution in low-income countries, a significant number of children remain unvaccinated, particularly in Ethiopia. The underlying socioeconomic challenges in these regions are recognized as primary contributors to the low vaccination rates. However, the reasons for this persistent disparity in Ethiopia's remote and underserved regions need further analysis. The study employed a cross-secti…

  • High prevalence of zero-dose children in underserved and special setting populations in Ethiopia using a generalize estimating equation and concentration index analysis

Open Access•Gashaw Andargie Biks, Fisseha Shiferie et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

In the study settings, the prevalence of zero-dose children is very high. Poor economic status, disempowerment of women, being unmarried, young maternal age, and underutilizing antenatal or post-natal services are the important predictors. Therefore, it is recommended to target tailored integrated and context-specific service delivery approach. Moreover, extend immunization sessions opening hours during the evening/weekend in the city administrat…

  • Wealth-based inequality in the continuum of maternal health service utilisation in 16 sub-Saharan African countries

Open Access•Anteneh Asefa, Samson Gebremedhin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2023

Addressing the coverage gap in maternal continuum of care in SSA using multidimensional and people-centred approaches remains a key strategy needed to realise the SDG3. The pro-rich wealth-based inequalities observed show that bespoke pro-poor or population-wide approaches are needed

  • The effect of school feeding programme on class absenteeism and academic performance of schoolchildren in Southern Ethiopia

Open Access•Tsion A Desalegn, Tsion Desalegn et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2021

Objective: Ethiopia recently scaled up the implementation of a school feeding programme (SFP). Yet, evidence on the impact of such programmes on academic outcomes remains inconclusive. We evaluated the effect of the SFP on class absenteeism and academic performance of primary school students (grade 5–8) in Sidama zone, Southern Ethiopia. Design: This prospective cohort study enrolled SFP-beneficiary ( n 240) and non-beneficiary ( n 240) children …

  • Trends in the national food supply of absorbable zinc in Ethiopia

    Open Access•Samson Gebremedhin•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2021

Objective: This study analysed trends (1990–2017) in the availability of absorbable Zn in the national food supply of Ethiopia. Design: The supply statistics of ninety-five food groups were obtained from the Ethiopian Food Balance Sheets compiled by FAO. Zn and phytate contents were determined using multiple composition databases and absorbable Zn estimated via the ‘Miller’ equation. Estimated average requirement cut-point method was performed to…

  • Aflatoxin contamination of human breast milk and complementary foods in southern Ethiopia

Open Access•Mesfin Eshete, Samson Gebremedhin et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2020

Exposure to unsafe level of aflatoxin in early life may lead to growth faltering. However, the extent of contamination of breast milk and complementary foods is poorly examined. We determined aflatoxin M 1 (AFM 1 ) and B 1 (AFB 1 ) contamination of human breast milk and cereal-based cooked complementary foods, respectively, among households having children 6-23 months of age in Sidama zone, southern Ethiopia. Data were collected through two cross…

  • Sexually transmitted disease among street dwellers in southern Ethiopia

Open Access•Negash Wakgari, Terefe Woyo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

In this study, a significant number of street dwellers reported experiencing symptoms of a sexually transmitted disease. Despite having awareness about sexually transmitted diseases, seeking treatment from a health center was found to be low based on both quantitative and qualitative findings. We recommend that health care providers should undergo special training to address the sexual and reproductive health problems of street dwellers

  • Uptake of routine vitamin A supplementation for children in Humbo district, southern Ethiopia

Open Access•Getnet Kassa, Addisalem Mesfin et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

The VAS coverage of the area was approaching the expected national target of 80%. However, the uptake can be enhanced though awareness creation and improving socio-economic status of the community

  • The association between acute malnutrition and water, sanitation, and hygiene among children aged 6–59 months in rural E thiopia

Open Access•Merel H van Cooten, Selamawit Mengesha Bilal et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2018

The causes of acute malnutrition-or "wasting"-are complex, and a better understanding of the underlying drivers is necessary in order to design effective interventions. Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices may play a fundamental role in acute malnutrition, but more research is needed to confirm this relationship. We investigated the association between WASH practices and acute malnutrition among children 6 to 59 months of age in rural …

  • Inclusion and exclusion errors in the targeted supplementary feeding programme of Ethiopia

Open Access•Samson Gebremedhin, Tilahun Bekele et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2018

Ethiopia's targeted supplementary feeding (TSF) programme aims to rehabilitate moderately malnourished children and pregnant and lactating women in selected chronically food-insecure districts. Screening for malnutrition is made by health extension workers through the quarterly community health days (CHD) events based on mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) thresholds. This validation study examined the extent of targeting errors of inclusion (prov…

  • The effectiveness bundling of zinc with Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) for improving adherence to acute watery diarrhea treatment in Ethiopia

Open Access•Samson Gebremedhin, Girma Mamo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

Bundling zinc with ORS using a pouch with instructional messages increases adherence to the treatment. 'HC level bundling' is more CE than the 'central bundling' approach

  • Coverage, compliance and factors associated with utilization of iron supplementation during pregnancy in eight rural districts of Ethiopia

Open Access•Samson Gebremedhin, Aregash Samuel et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Promoting early and frequent ANC, enhancing the quality of ANC counseling and promoting the knowledge of women on anemia are essential strategies for improving the utilization of iron supplements

  • Prevalence of prenatal zinc deficiency and its association with socio-demographic, dietary and health care related factors in Rural Sidama, Southern Ethiopia

Open Access•Samson Gebremedhin, Fikre Enquselassie et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

ZD is of public health concern in the area. The problem must be combatted through a combination of short, medium and long-term strategies. This includes the use of household based phytate reduction food processing techniques, agricultural based approaches and livelihood promotion strategies

  • Male circumcision and its association with HIV infection and sexually transmitted diseases

    Open Access•Samson Gebremedhin•ARTICLE•SAHARA-J Journal of Social…•2011•Referencias: 19

The study aimed to assess the association between male circumcision and HIV infection and STDs. The issue is controversial as various studies reported conflicting findings. A cross-sectional comparative study based on the secondary data of 18 Demographic Health Surveys (DHS), carried out in Sub-Saharan Africa starting from 2003, was conducted. From all surveys, information on 70 554 males aged 15 - 59 years was extracted. The association between …
