The Social Movement Evolution of Non‐State Armed Groups in the Web 3.0 Era
How do the emerging Web 3.0 technologies affect the survival of non-state armed groups (NSAGs) in their violent struggles vis-à-vis state entities? While techno-optimists argue that Web 3.0 can democratize the internet and curb monopolistic practices, its decentralized features, such as enhanced privacy, data ownership, and personalization, also present significant security challenges. These technologies can be weaponized by NSAGs to promote thei…

Why Sanctions Termination Doesn't Put an End to Humanitarian Crises
A significant literature has demonstrated that the imposition of economic sanctions inflicts socio-economic hardships on civilian populations of target states. However, whether the negative humanitarian consequences can continue over the long term remains unclear. We explore this question in the context of the permanent lifting of comprehensive US sanctions against Sudan in October 2017. Relying on 41 semi-structured, in-depth interviews, we pres…
Association between mild depressive states in polycystic ovary syndrome and an unhealthy lifestyle
Objective: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent and frequently encountered gynecological disorder. Its high variability and the complexities associated with its management often lead to psychological stress in affected women, manifesting in symptoms of depression. Embracing a healthy lifestyle is fundamental in PCOS treatment. Consistent adherence to a healthy lifestyle not only aids in improving PCOS symptoms but also plays a role in …
Is high-intensity conflict escalation inevitable in the future? A two-level game analysis on the causes of US-Iran risky rivalry
In recent years, there appears to be a growing consensus among policymakers in both the East and the West, that the decades of global peace after the Cold War has now come to an end, and that the world is facing mounting security risks to the future of humanity. Among those challenges, the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict poses particularly significant risks to regional and global security, and is closely related to many other contemporary internationa…
Costly Signaling and China's Strategic Engagement in Arctic Regional Governance
In recent years, China has become an increasingly important actor in Arctic regional governance. While Beijing consistently frames its engagement in the region as a strategy of mutually-beneficial cooperation, some Arctic countries have raised significant concerns about its growing economic presence, warning that China may leverage its geopolitical influence to change the existing norms and rules in the polar region. Facing the mounting “China th…
A Friend in Need May Not Be a Friend Indeed
Is foreign aid an effective soft power tool to bolster the international image of donor states? This article explores this question in the context of China’s humanitarian assistance to Europe amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Anti-coronavirus aid generated affinity for Beijing in some receiver countries while backfired in others. Borrowing insights from social psychology, this study presents an explanation for this heterogeneous effect. It argues that …
Economic sanctions and state-sponsored terrorism
While economic sanctions are often used as a foreign policy tool to fight state-sponsored terrorism, their efficacy remains unclear. This article argues that the intensifying economic hardship caused by sanctions forces the targeted governments to undertake a retrenchment strategy, which in turn reduces the overall frequency of state-sponsored terrorist attacks. Using cross-sectional-time-series data of Iranian-backed terrorism from 1987 to 2005,…
Grounded theory research on the factors that lead to doctor moral hazard
Moral hazard clearly exists among doctors, and it has a dramatic impact on doctor-patient relationships, medical costs and medical risks. This study explored the factors that lead to doctor moral hazard, as well as the interrelationships and internal regularity of these factors. This study takes doctor moral hazard as the research content and the inducing factors as the core theme, conducting grounded theory research on the causes of doctor moral…
Informal Trade Along the China–north Korea Border
Why do Chinese traders along the China–North Korea border turn to informal trade, and what does it provide for them? Using a unique set of interviews with Chinese formal and informal traders operating in North Korea, we argue that the strategies of informal trade are a calculated response to certain types of risk. In doing so, we introduce a typology of risks and the mechanisms by which informal trade allows traders to mitigate those risks. Becau…
Chinese Firms’ Troubled Relationship with Market Transformation in North Korea
The coping strategies that small Chinese firms operating in North Korea have chosen involve insinuating themselves into North Korean political and social networks, and structuring their investments so as to minimize their exposure to North Korean infrastructure, workers, and institutions. As a result, it is unlikely that Chinese firms will be the main drivers of market transformation in North Korea
Clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes of synchronous renal cell carcinoma and urothelial carcinoma
Background: To better understand the characteristics, and survival outcomes of synchronous renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and urothelial carcinoma (UC), we described and analyzed the clinical features, factors, and prognosis of patients with synchronous RCC and UC using a large population-based database. Methods: Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2004-2016), we identified patient with concurrent RCC and UC at ini…
