Three experiments were conducted to investigate the consistency effect and phonetic independence effect in Chinese characters. Four kinds of Chinese characters, consistent, inconsistent, exceptions phonograms and non-phonograms, were chosen as stimuli, and the results of a naming task showed that there existed consistency effect only in low-frequency characters, and the exception phonograms were named slowest.
