  • Smoke-Free Laws and Hazardous Drinking

Open Access•Nan Jiang, Mariaelena Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Tobacco and alcohol use are strongly associated. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship of smoke-free law coverage and smoke-free bar law coverage with hazardous drinking behaviors among a representative sample of U.S. adult drinkers ( n = 17,057). We merged 2009 National Health Interview Survey data, American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation U.S. Tobacco Control Laws Database, and Census Population Estimates. Hazardous drinking outcom…

  • Packaging colour research by tobacco companies

Lauren Kass Lempert, Stanton A Glantz et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2016

Companies use pack colours to manipulate consumers' perceptions of the taste, strength and health impacts of the cigarettes inside the packs, thereby altering their characteristics and effectively creating new products. In countries that do not require standardised packaging, regulators should consider colour equivalently to other changes in cigarette characteristics (eg, physical characteristics, ingredients, additives and flavourings) when maki…

  • FCTC followed by accelerated implementation of tobacco advertising bans

Heikki Hiilamo, Stanton A Glantz et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2016

Implementation of FCTC Article 13 was followed by increased progress towards complete advertising bans, but progress is incomplete, especially among low-income countries. Low-income countries need comprehensive support to implement FCTC as part of a broad effort to reinvigorate progress on global implementation of the FCTC. Enforcing complete bans requires constant monitoring and attacking of tobacco industry efforts to circumvent them

  • Tobacco companies’ efforts to undermine ingredient disclosure

    Clayton Velicer, Stella Aguinaga-Bialous et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2015

Despite promises to provide data that would allow regulators to predict constituent data for all brands on the market, the final MBS results offered no useful predictive information to inform regulators, the scientific community or consumers. When implementing FCTC Articles 9 and 10, regulatory agencies should demand detailed by-brand information on tobacco product constituents and toxin deliveries to users

  • Tobacco documents reveal questionable professional recertification by industry menthol expert

Daniel Stevens, Stanton A Glantz et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2015

Jonathan Daniel Heck, PhD, a board certified toxicologist, career scientist at Lorillard Tobacco, and industry expert on menthol, served as an industry representative on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC) from 2010 through 2014. In 2011, Heck was the lead author of the “Industry Menthol Report; Menthol Cigarettes: No Disproportionate Impact on Public Health”1 submitted to the FDA. To beco…

  • Cigarette company trade secrets are not secret

Clayton Velicer, Lauren Kass Lempert et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2014

Because cigarette companies routinely analyse their competitors' cigarettes in great detail, this information is neither secret nor commercially valuable and, thus, does not meet the legal definition of a 'trade secret.' This information is only being kept 'secret' from the people consuming cigarettes and the scientific community. Public agencies should release this detailed information because it would provide valuable information about how ingr…

  • Strong Tobacco Control Program Requirements and Secure Funding Are Not Enough

Allison Kennedy, Sarah R Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Referencias: 43

Florida’s Tobacco Pilot Program (TPP; 1998–2003), with its edgy Truth media campaign, achieved unprecedented youth smoking reductions and became a model for tobacco control programming. In 2006, 3 years after the TPP was defunded, public health groups restored funding for tobacco control programming by convincing Florida voters to amend their constitution. Despite the new program’s strong legal structure, Governor Charlie Crist’s Department of He…
