  • Risk thresholds for alcohol consumption

    Open Access•Angela M Wood, Stephen Kaptoge et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: Low-risk limits recommended for alcohol consumption vary substantially across different national guidelines. To define thresholds associated with lowest risk for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease, we studied individual-participant data from 599 912 current drinkers without previous cardiovascular disease. METHODS: We did a combined analysis of individual-participant data from three large-scale data sources in 19 high-inco…

  • The secondary-school ‘market’ and young people's health

Astrid Fletcher, Chris Bonell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Background Secondary schools are increasingly subject to quasi-markets in the UK, Europe and North America, typified by: diversity of school types; parents choosing where to apply; and government publishing school performance data. There is a paucity of research examining these policies potential for harming young people's health. Aim To develop a logic-model of mechanisms by which market-oriented education policies might influence students' heal…

  • Cross-sectional survey of older peoples' views related to influenza vaccine uptake

Open Access•Punam Mangtani, Elizabeth Breeze et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Vaccine uptake was high, but non uptake was still noted in 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men aged over 74 years. Around 70% reported they would not have the vaccine in the following year. The divergent reasons for non-uptake, and the positive influence from a health care worker, suggests further uptake will require education and encouragement from a health care worker tailored towards the different views for not having influenza vaccination. Non-uptake…

  • Local Area Deprivation and Urban–Rural Differences in Anxiety and Depression Among People Older Than 75 Years in Britain

Kate Walters, Elizabeth Breeze et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 37

Objectives. We sought to determine the association of depression and anxiety with “area deprivation” (neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation) and population density among people older than 75 years in Britain. Methods. Postal codes were used to link census area information to individual data on depression and anxiety in 13349 people aged 75 years and older taking part in a trial of health screening. Results. Living in the most socioeconomically d…

  • Socioeconomic and demographic predictors of mortality and institutional residence among middle aged and older people

Elizabeth Breeze, Andy Sloggett et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1999•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 21

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To identify socioeconomic and demographic predictors of long term mortality and institutional residence in old age, taking into account changes in socioeconomic and demographic circumstances between the 1971 and 1981 censuses. DESIGN: Multivariate logistic regression modelling of outcomes for 10 year age cohorts of each gender. The outcomes were death by 31 December 1992; being in an institution in 1991. SETTING: Members of the …

  • Other People's Tobacco Smoke

    Astrid Fletcher•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1991

helpful to many.It is sad to note that because of its long gestation, some chapters are already out of date.Ofparticular regret is that the 1989 white paper and NHS Act merit only a few brief anticipatory paragraphs.I am sure that many would have looked to a book such as this to give them as clear an explanation of current arrangements as it does of the previous ones.Nonetheless, I think that the Oxford textbook should find a place on the "to han…
