Latent classes of mental health disorders and their associations with polymorphisms of 5HTTLPR and BDNF in a Chilean primary care population
This study explored the association between serotonin transporter gene (5HTTLPR) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene (BDNF) polymorphisms with mental health disorders in a Chilean primary care population using latent class analysis. The sample included 789 adults genotyped for 5HTTLPR and BDNF, who were assessed for psychiatric diagnoses using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). Two distinct mental health profiles emer…
Mental health in the Americas
The treatment gap for mental health remains a public health concern. A high proportion of adults, children, and indigenous individuals with serious mental illness remains untreated. The result is an elevated prevalence of mental disorders and global burden of disease
Associations between unemployment and major depressive disorder
Prediction of depression in European general practice attendees
Response rate to follow-up in all countries was uniformly high, which suggests that prediction will be based on almost a full cohort. The results of our reliability analysis are encouraging and suggest that data collected during the course of PREDICT will have a satisfactory level of stability. The development of a multi-factor risk score for depression will lay the foundation for future research on risk reduction in primary care. Our data will a…
Psychiatric Disorders among the Mapuche in Chile
Background: The Mapuche are the largest indigenous group in Chile; yet almost all data on the mental health of indigenous populations are from North America. Aim: The study examines the differential DSM-III-R prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders and service utilization among indigenous and non-indigenous community residence. Methods: The Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) was administered to a stratified random sample of 75 …
Our results confirm the existence of a wide gap between the need for care and the treatment that is actually received. The informal and folkloric alternative resources (priests, family members, healers, herbalists, etc.) were used less frequently than is generally believed to be true. The indirect barriers of access to services--linked to a lack of knowledge and to stigma--were more frequent than were the direct barriers. A sizable number of peop…
Attitudes of Professional Mental Health Workers to Psychiatry
An attempt is presented to measure and compare attitudes to and ideas about psychiatry and mental health services in Concepcion, Sheffield and Trieste. These cities have in some respects comparable populations but very different mental health services. Questionnaires in English, Italian and Spanish were used to assess the views of professional workers in the field. The information collected showed that the Italian professionals had the highest le…
Users' Satisfaction with Mental Health Services
The opinion and level of satisfaction of the users of three different mental health services are presented as a way of evaluating the outcome of institutional and community approaches to psychiatric services. The information was collected in the cities of Concepcion (Chile), Sheffield (England) and Trieste (Italy) interviewing a sample of the users of the psychiatric services using a questionnaire specifically designed to suit the study's aims. T…
