  • A Comparative Study on Cyberbullying Behaviors Among Korean and American College Students

    Open Access•Gang Lee, Sinyong Choi•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2025•Referencias: 5

Cyberbullying has emerged as a prominent social issue in recent years, affecting individuals across various age groups, including college students. This study aims to shed light on cyberbullying behaviors among American and Korean college students, drawing on the lenses of social learning theory and general strain theory as theoretical frameworks. Two survey data sets of 1067 college students (686 from South Korea and 381 from the U.S.) revealed …

  • The Mediating Process of Social Learning in Cyberspace

Open Access•Gang Lee, Hyunseok Jang et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2022•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 7

Given the massive power of the virtual environment of online networks, the prevalence of cyberbullying and the misuse of information technology continue to increase with the development of more advanced information technology. This study investigated the process of cyberbullying in social media among the Korean college student population. The researchers sought to examine the effect of social structural factors on cyberbullying that are mediated …

  • Race, Gender, and Program Type as Predictive Risk Factors of Recidivism for Juvenile Offenders in Georgia

Open Access•Matheson Sanchez, Gang Lee•ARTICLE•The Journal of Public and…•2015•Referencias: 2

Race, gender and program type have shown to be effective predictors of future recidivism for juveniles. Previous research shows that minority juveniles offend and recidivate at a higher rate than white juveniles do. Previous research also shows that male juveniles offend and recidivate at a higher rate than female juveniles do. Past literature shows that juveniles who receive rehabilitative sanctions are less likely to recidivate that juveniles w…

  • The relevance of social and cultural contexts

Open Access•Gang Lee, Kisun Yim et al.•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2012•Referencias: 6

Although research shows an inverse relationship between religiosity and delinquency, this association is not well understood. Scholars have attempted to explicate these findings in a number of ways, including arguments that: (1) the religiosity–delinquency relationship is limited to certain types of delinquency, (2) other theoretical variables explain or interpret the relationship, and (3) the relationship is stronger in the context of what are t…

  • Gender Differences in Criminal Sentencing

    Open Access•S Fernando Rodriguez, Theodore R Curry et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2006•Citada por: 25•Referencias: 38

Objective. Many studies find that females benefit from their gender in sentencing decisions. Few researchers, however, address whether the gender‐sentencing association might be stronger for some crimes, such as minor nonviolent offending, and weaker for other offenses, such as serious violent crime. Method. Using a large random sample of convicted offenders in Texas drawn from a statewide project on sentencing practices mandated by the 73rd Texa…

  • Does Victim Gender Increase Sentence Severity? Further Explorations of Gender Dynamics and Sentencing Outcomes

    Open Access•Theodore R Curry, Gang Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2004

Theoretical and empirical research pertaining to the influence of gender on sentencing outcomes has focused almost exclusively on the gender of offenders. What this literature has not fully considered is how the gender of crime victims might affect sentencing outcomes. Using data for offenders convicted of three violent crimes in the seven largest metro counties in Texas in 1991, the authors find evidence that offenders who victimized females rec…

  • An Economic Theory of Deviance

    Jeong‐yoo Kim, Jeong-Yoo Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2001

We develop a model of deviance by incorporating the labeling effect into rational choice theory. In our model, we provide an explanation of the process through which a deviant is stigmatized and explore theoretically the relationship between the experience of having deviated and the incentive for deviation. Surprisingly, our study finds that an ex-deviant is not necessarily more likely to deviate, contrary to widely held belief. This is because t…

  • Age, Social Learning, and Social Bonding in Adolescent Substance Use

    Ronald L Akers, Gang Lee•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•1999•Citada por: 48•Referencias: 4

We propose that social learning and social bonding theories are capable of accounting for the well-known relationship of crime and delinquency to age. Models incorporating age and variables derived from these two theories are tested with data on adolescent substance use among a large sample of Midwest adolescents in Grades 7 through 12. Older adolescents consume more marijuana than younger adolescents, and the age-use curve is matched by the rela…

  • A Longitudinal Test of Social Learning Theory

    Open Access•Ronald L Akers, Gang Lee•ARTICLE•Journal of Drug Issues•1996

A general social learning theory of deviance is applied to adolescent smoking as a form of sustance use and tested with data from a 5-year longitudinal study of a panel (N=454) of respondents in grades 7 through 12 in an Iowa community. The major components of the process specified in the theory are differential association, differential reinforcement, definitions (attitudes), and modeling. The process is one in which the operation of these varia…

  • Economic Change, Inequality and Distress in the Czech Republic

    Open Access•Joseph Hraba, Frederick O Lorenz et al.•ARTICLE•Czech Sociological Review•1994•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 9

Social scientists predict that inequality will surely grow during the economic and political restructuring of East Europe. This inequality will result in uneven distress in these societies, according to stress-distress researchers. Furthermore, the relations between inequality of position and distress (depression and anxiety) are mediated by mastery and appraisal; these two elaborated models were tested in this study. The results generally suppor…

  • Economic Reform in the Czech Republic

    Open Access•Gang Lee, Joseph Hraba et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•1994•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 12

The Czech Republic is changing rapidly and its current economic transformation is a strain on Czech families. In this study, the connection between economic strain and individual well-being is investigated via mailed questionnaires from 234 households in the Czech Republic. For Czech women, depression rises more with economic strain than does hostility, while Czech men become more hostile than depressed in the face of economic strain. For women, …
