  • Locus of Conjunctions in Academic Writing

    Open Access•Imran Shah•ARTICLE•PAKISTAN LANGUAGES AND HUMANITIES…•2021

A unified texture of a text is the salient feature of a mature text. Following the Hallidayan approach, this paper explored the worth of conjunctions in academic writing. Corpus-driven comparative research was conducted with a view to investigating the frequency and concordance of conjunctions in academic writings between native and non-native young learners. Four types of conjunctions were extracted from the corpora of 400 essays compiled from I…

  • Association between resting heart rate across the life course and all-cause mortality

    Bríain Ó Hartaigh, Thomas M Gill et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2014•Referencias: 38

BACKGROUND: Resting heart rate (RHR) is an independent risk factor for mortality. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether elevations in childhood and mid-adulthood RHR, including changes over time, are associated with mortality later in life. We sought to evaluate the association between RHR across the life course, along with its changes and all-cause mortality. METHODS: We studied 4638 men and women from the Medical Research Council (MRC) National S…

  • Childhood, adolescent and early adult body mass index in relation to adult mortality

Open Access•Bjorn H Strand, Bjørn Heine Strand et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2012•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 35

BACKGROUND: Adult body mass index (BMI) has been consistently related to mortality, but little is known about the impact of earlier life BMI on adult mortality. The aim is to investigate the impact of childhood, adolescent and early adult BMI on premature adult all-cause mortality. METHODS: The British 1946 cohort study was used to assess the association of BMI in childhood, adolescence and adulthood with mortality 26-60 years (332 deaths). 4462 …

  • Body mass index through life and adult mortality

Bjorn H Strand, Diana Kuh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2009

Results: In terms of incidence, in 1980, the overall ASR varied widely across countries, ranging from 18 per 100 000 in Belarus to 309 per 100 000 in Switzerland. Between 1980 and 2002, prostate cancer incidence increased in all 20 countries. The OPC was the smallest in Denmark (+40%) and highest in Italy (+336%). Generally, countries with lower incidence in early years had the highest OPCs. In North-America and Australia incidence peaked around …

  • Do childhood cognitive ability or smoking behaviour explain the influence of lifetime socio-economic conditions on premature adult mortality in a British post war birth cohort

Open Access•Diana Kuh, Sirdar Ikbal Ali Shah et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2009•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 35

Poor childhood and adult socio-economic conditions, lower childhood cognitive ability and cigarette smoking are all associated with adult mortality risk. Using data on 4458 men and women aged 60 years from a British birth cohort study, we investigated the extent to which these risk factors are part of the same pathway linking childhood experience to adult survival. Compared with women from non-manual origins, men from non-manual origins, women an…

  • Maternal Obesity in Early Pregnancy and Risk of Spontaneous and Elective Preterm Deliveries

Gordon C S Smith, Sirdar Ikbal Ali Shah et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 13

Objectives. We sought to determine the association between maternal body mass index and risk of preterm delivery. Methods. We assessed 187 290 women in Scotland and estimated adjusted odds ratios for spontaneous and elective preterm deliveries among overweight, obese, and morbidly obese women relative to normal-weight women. Results. Among nulliparous women, the risk of requiring an elective preterm delivery increased with increasing BMI, whereas…
