Self-help plus and problem management plus – a qualitative study to assess acceptability and feasibility with rape and GBV survivors in South Africa
Despite GBV survivors having high rates of PTSD and depression, well-being support is minimal • This is the first study to test a stepped mental health intervention for South African GBV survivors • SH+ and PM+ shown to be acceptable and feasible mental-health interventions for GBV survivors • Contextual adaptation of interventions is essential for acceptability, feasibility and impact
In pursuit of intimacy
Notions of womanhood inculcate naturalised ideologies of femininity, sexuality, motherhood and caregiving. The paper asks how disability stigma intersects with womanhood to characterise intimate partnerships in South Africa. In-depth interviews with 30 women with a range of disabilities were conducted in informal settlements in Cape Town. Findings suggest that disability stigma may hamper attainment of normative womanhood and sexual relationships…
Violence against children in Latin America and the Caribbean
Past-year physical and emotional violence by caregivers and students is widespread in LAC across all ages in childhood, as is IPV against girls aged 15 - 19 years. Data collection must be expanded in LAC to monitor progress towards the sustainable development goals, develop effective prevention and response strategies, and shed light on violence relating to organized crime/gangs
Who perpetrates violence against children? A systematic analysis of age-specific and sex-specific data
OBJECTIVE: The epidemiology of violence against children is likely to differ substantially by sex and age of the victim and the perpetrator. Thus far, investment in effective prevention strategies has been hindered by lack of clarity in the burden of childhood violence across these dimensions. We produced the first age-specific and sex-specific prevalence estimates by perpetrator type for physical, sexual and emotional violence against children g…
Intimate partner violence, forced first sex and adverse pregnancy outcomes in a sample of Zimbabwean women accessing maternal and child health care
Forced first sex (FFS) and intimate partner violence (IPV) are associated with adverse maternal and newborn health outcomes. Strengthening primary and secondary violence prevention is required to improve pregnancy-related outcomes
Addressing violence against women
So Now I’m the Man’
Intimate femicide, the killing of a woman by an intimate partner, is the leading cause of female murder in South Africa. Research on men who kill in South Africa has highlighted the psychological damage caused by exposure to severe adversity in childhood, but this alone does not explain the gendered context of these murders. This article presents analyses from in-depth interviews with 20 incarcerated men who killed their partners and explores the…

Opportunities and obstacles to screening pregnant women for intimate partner violence during antenatal care in Zimbabwe
Pregnancy offers an opportunity for midwives to recognise and respond to women experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV). However, most antenatal care interventions have been conducted in private specialist services in high-income countries and do not address the structural and cultural realities of developing country settings. We report on an exploratory qualitative study conducted in antenatal public health facilities in Harare, Zimbabwe, in…
A Systematic Review of African Studies on Intimate Partner Violence against Pregnant Women
Impact of telephonic psycho-social support on adherence to post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after rape
South Africa has one of the highest rates of both rape and HIV infections. Of great concern is the possibility of HIV transmission during the assault, but adherence to post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) has been varied and low. We developed a telephonic psycho-social support, leaflet and adherence diary intervention for rape victims and tested its impact on adherence to PEP. A randomised control trial was conducted in the Western and Eastern Cape an…
Barriers to post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) completion after rape
Sexual violence and HIV are two serious public health problems in South Africa. Post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent HIV after rape was introduced into the South African public health services in 2002 but many questions on the completion of PEP medication remain. A qualitative study involving in-depth interviews was conducted with 29 women attending sexual assault services in an urban and a rural site to explore PEP use after rape. It showe…
