Long-term HIV/Aids-related prevention behaviours among men having sex with men
The aim of this paper is to present trends in reported HIV-related behaviours among men having sex with men (MSM) in Switzerland. In 1992, 1994, 1997 and 2000 a standardized anonymous questionnaire was placed in gay newspapers and distributed in gay associations. High levels of protection (no anal sex or consistent condom use) with casual partners were found: around 90%, with a peak in 1994 and a slight decrease in 2000 to the level of 1992. With…
Health trends among drug users attending needle exchange programmes in Switzerland (1994–2000)
As a part of an assessment of the Swiss drug harm-reduction policy, cross-sectional surveys were conducted in 1994, 1996 and 2000 among attenders of all needle exchange programmes (NEP) in Switzerland to assess changes in specific aspects of their health related to drug use. Data were gathered in each NEP over one week, using a questionnaire completed partly with an interviewer and partly self administered. The questionnaire covered socio-demogra…
Antiretroviral therapies from the patient's perspective
Thirty-seven patients receiving antiretroviral therapy were interviewed in depth in preparation for a quantitative study of patients' perceptions of their treatment. Patients described three types of difficulty with treatment: conflict between treatment recommendations and daily life, side effects (immediate and long term) and fear that treatment would reveal their seropositivity. These problems interfered with treatment adherence which was other…
Comparison of the clientele of an anonymous HIV test centre and persons tested in the general population
This study compares the clientele of a Swiss anonymous test centre with the general population tested. Information was obtained through similar questionnaires submitted to two samples of HIV-tested people aged from 17 to 45 years: the first administered in the context of a general population telephone survey (n = 245) and the second completed during face-to-face interviews of the clientele of an anonymous test centre (n = 250). The test centre sa…

Increased condom use without other major changes in sexual behavior among the general population in Switzerland
OBJECTIVES: This study is part of a continuous evaluation of the Swiss AIDS prevention strategy from 1987 through 1994. METHODS: Annual telephone surveys of samples representative of the general population aged 17 through 45 years have been conducted since 1987 to monitor behavioral change. RESULTS: No major changes in level of sexual activity (lifetime number of partners, frequency of sexual encounters in the past week) or potential exposure to …
Adolescent sexuality
The aim of this paper is to determine gender differences as regards adolescent sexuality, in order to improve the adjustment of prevention programmes to boys' and girls' specific needs. Data were collected as part of the Swiss Multicentric Adolescent Survey on Health. Anonymous questionnaires were distributed in school classes among a national representative sample of about 9,300 adolescents (15 to 20 years old). About 45% of the total sample rep…
Sexual behaviour of gay and bisexual men in eight European countries

By end March of 1992, 12,347 completed questionnaires had been obtained. A preliminary analysis shows striking si…
