Unpacking ancient agricultural systems using chemotaxonomy to classify Poaceae pollen from Nar Gölü, Cappadocia, Türkiye
Current morphological palynological methods for taxonomic discrimination of wild Poaceae versus domesticated cereals result in high levels of uncertainty. This uncertainty complicates the use of pollen records when investigating changes in historical landscapes managed by communities since the first evidence of cereal cultivation. To improve taxonomic resolution in the Poaceae family, we applied a chemotaxonomic approach using pollen chemical tra…
Forest change in the northern Yucatan lowlands (Mexico) during Maya cultural periods
Palaeoecological records from the Maya lowlands indicate that there is an emerging pattern of complex vegetation change across the Terminal Classic Period, a time that was characterised by frequent droughts and collapse of major Maya centres. To fully understand the extent of anthropogenic influences on Yucatan forest composition in space and time, more palaeoecological records are needed, as well as a better understanding of the relationship bet…
The Influence of Gender of Senior Researchers on Research Practice in Sports and Exercise Science and Medicine
There are gender-based differences in research practices in medicine, but these differences have not been examined in the broad fields of sports and exercise science and medicine. In this study, we determined whether senior author gender influences study design, study topic, and reporting practices in sports and exercise science and medicine. We analysed 509 articles published in the first issue of 2023 for all Quartile 1 sports science journals …

Seasonality of Holocene hydroclimate in the Eastern Mediterranean reconstructed using the oxygen isotope composition of carbonates and diatoms from Lake Nar, central Turkey
A positive shift in the oxygen isotope composition ( δ 18 O) of lake carbonates in the Eastern Mediterranean from the early to late Holocene is usually interpreted as a change to drier (reduced precipitation and evaporation (P/E)) conditions. However, it has also been suggested that changes in the seasonality of precipitation could explain these trends. Here, Holocene records of δ 18 O from both carbonates and diatom silica, from Lake Nar in cent…

Human impact on the hydroenvironment of Lake Parishan, SW Iran, through the late-Holocene
A multiproxy record from Lake Parishan, SW Iran, shows human impact on the lake and its catchment over the last 4000 years. The Parishan record provides evidence of changes in lake hydrology, from ostracod, diatom and isotope analyses, that are directly linked to human activity in the catchment; recorded by pollen and charcoal and supported by regional archaeological and historical data. The lake ostracod fauna is particularly sensitive to human-…
Modifying the marsh
The ecological impacts of human activities have infiltrated the whole of the ‘natural world’ and precipitated calls for a newly defined geological epoch – the Anthropocene. While scholars discuss tipping-points and scale, viewed over the longue durée, it is becoming clear that we have inherited the compounding consequences of a constructed environment with a long history of human landscape modification. By linking phytolith and micro-charcoal evi…

Paleoclimatic and archeological implications of Pleistocene and Holocene environments in Azraq, Jordan
Wetlands are a key archive for paleoclimatic and archeological work, particularly in arid regions, as they provide a focus for human occupation and preserve environmental information. The sedimentary record from 'Ayn Qasiyya, a spring site on the edge of the Azraq Qa, provides a well-dated sequence through the last glacial–interglacial transition (LGIT) allowing environmental changes in the present-day Jordanian desert to be investigated robustly…
Climate variability over the last two millennia in the North American Monsoon region, recorded in laminated lake sediments from Laguna de Juanacatlán, Mexico
High-resolution titanium (Ti) data obtained using an ITRAX XRF core scanner from a laminated sediment core from the Laguna de Juanacatlán, western central Mexico yield a unique high-resolution record of runoff (precipitation) change for the last 2000 years. In the absence of reliable, long-term meteorological records, comparison of the Ti data with information from the rich Spanish colonial period archives and the post-Independence period, confir…
Concurrent and longitudinal effects of ethnic identity and experiences of discrimination on psychosocial adjustment of Navajo adolescents
In this study, we examined concurrent and longitudinal relations among Navajo adolescents' ethnic identity, experiences of discrimination, and psychosocial outcomes (i.e., self-esteem, substance use, and social functioning). At Time 1, 137 Navajo adolescents (67 male, 70 female), primarily in Grades 9 and 10, completed a written survey assessing ethnic identity, discrimination experiences, and a range of internalizing and externalizing behaviors.…

Stable isotope records of Late Quaternary climate and hydrology from Mediterranean lakes
Interpreting lake isotope records of Holocene environmental change in the Eastern Mediterranean
Quantifying climatic change through the last glacial–interglacial transition based on lake isotope palaeohydrology from central Turkey
Questions remain as to the nature of climatic change through the last glacial–interglacial transition in the eastern Mediterranean region, particularly the relative contribution of evaporation and precipitation to regional water balance. Here changes in oxygen isotope values through this time period from Eski Acıgöl, a crater lake in central Turkey, are investigated using hydrological and isotope mass balance models. These allow changes in evapor…
Ethnic Identity and Psychosocial Functioning in Navajo Adolescents
The current study assessed associations among theoretically driven measures of ethnic identity and psychosocial adjustment among 137 Navajo adolescents. For both sexes, measures of students' sense of affirmation and belonging to their ethnic heritage emerged as a strong predictor of positive psychosocial functioning. Less‐consistent patterns of association emerged between other measures of ethnic identity and psychosocial adjustment. Students wit…
A high-resolution late Holocene lake isotope record from Turkey and links to North Atlantic and monsoon climate
A high resolution proxy record of precipitation and evaporation variability through the past 1700 yr from δ18O analysis of a varved lake sequence from central Turkey shows rapid shifts between dry periods (AD 300–500 and AD 1400–1950) and wetter intervals (AD 560–750 and AD 1000–1350). Changes are consistent with changes in instrumental and proxy records of the Indian monsoon, dry summers in the Eastern Mediterranean being associated with periods…
Interpreting stable-isotope records from freshwater snail-shell carbonate
The oxygen and carbon stable-isotope ratios from fossil snail shells within a small intramontane lake in southwest Turkey are used to highlight the potential, and problems, of using freshwater snail carbonate as a palaeoenvironmental proxy. Two species (Gyraulus piscinarum and Valvata cristata) yielded different isotope ratios at the same sampling intervals, probably due to differences in water-isotope composition between different microhabitats.…
